The Jade Seal Academy For Non-Magical Girls prided itself in being one of the best school experiences a young lady could have to prepare herself for the world, according to the brochure. It was situated on five fenced-in acres in the middle of an old-growth forest (also according to the brochure) and had state-of-the-art buildings and resources (according to the brochure). Most of that seemed fairly accurate on first glance, although Kaya Antares had it on good authority that that section of the brochure had probably been written about a hundred years ago and not updated since.
To be fair, the Academy had reportedly moved with the times - they had internet and smart classrooms and everything - but the buildings were definitely mostly the same ones that had been there when her great-grandmother had attended. Her sister had confided that the heat worked most of the time in the winter, but good luck with the air conditioners, and it was a good idea to get a fan for her dorm room.
Maybe she was focusing too much on the negative. Kaya ought to be proud of being yet another member of the Antares family to attend the Jade Seal Academy. It was certainly what was expected of her. She didn't even know what would have happened if she'd gotten into the Visible Unicorn School For Talented Young Ladies. She'd have probably gotten disowned - but since Kaya had the same magical talent level as a sack of bricks, here she was at Jade Seal.
She'd spent most of the day touring the grounds and facilities with her family. They had not changed much since she had toured them with her older sister three years ago when it had been her sister's turn to start. Somehow, they'd seemed more interesting when she had been twelve and had still held out that quiet unspoken hope that maybe she'd develop a magical ability and do something different. She'd hoped for an animal companion. She'd ended up with a goldfish on her 13th birthday, which had died six weeks later.
No, Kaya Antares was stuck here, and her family had headed back home to reminisce about all the good times they had had here, while she was stuck here... having them.
She guessed it didn't have to be all bad.
There was a Freshman Social First Night In tonight. It was "mandatory," which her sister had let her know meant "they want you to show up but really no one will care if you miss it." She'd been considering finding a quiet place and just reading a book, but... well, that wasn't going to get her anywhere except being listed as "the weird girl" on day one.
Kaya hoped to make it to at least day 15 before getting listed as "the weird girl."
The common room doors were open, but there wasn't anyone inside. That didn't really surprise her, either. Kaya was one of those "15 minutes early is five minutes late" people, so she was very used to being the first person to arrive places. She found a spot on a couch that hopefully had only been there since her mother's time at Jade Seal and not her grandmother's, and pulled out her e-reader to get back into the fantasy of being literally anyone else.
