Mae lagged behind, tugged gently along by Akari as they joined the others. Each step she took was a battle against her fears, but just what was she so afraid of , and why? Was it rejection? Or something else altogether? Maybe it was just easier being alone after Sarah died, but deep down she knew that she didn’t want to be alone. It was all so confusing when she tried to sort out her thoughts and emotions. Maybe the doctors were right, maybe there was something wrong with me she thought. That too was a battle that helped to fuel her anxiety.
As Akari pulled away, Mae stood silent, looking to each of the girls as her classmate took the liberty of introducing her to the others. They were smiling and teasing one another, which was normal right?
Am I….normal? What if I’m not? She trembled at the thought that maybe she wasn’t and would find out she didn’t belong. Still Mae wanted to try, and honestly she wasn’t left with much choice as long as she was attending the academy.
Without a hand to hold, Mae’s fingers retreated back to rest over the pendant hidden about her neck. Just feeling and knowing it was there seemed to bring a little peace, helping to steel her nerves against the looming anxiety as she offered Kaya and Kikyo a fragile smile.
“It’s nice to meet you both”
Her face flushed as she spoke what seemed only a step above a whisper. Thank goodness they were the only ones in the room or she would never be heard. Of course had the room been crowded, not even Akari could have dragged her in.
After a slight bow, Mae spied a nice Victorian chair sitting off to the side. It was small, adorned in antique floral upholstery with intricately carved wooden legs and armrests. The chair certainly seemed out of place, both looking and smelling like it came from someone’s grandmother’s house. Mae shuffled over to take a seat there, resting her brown leather satchel across her lap. There was a clear look of relief that settled across her face as she took a moment to rest her eyes, listening to Akari and Kikyo’s conversation over walruses and hawks.
