I, the most humble servant of the Dragon, submit this unworthy work to the eyes, office, and hands of Wan Sui Ye (Lord of Ten Thousand Years, an honorific for Emperors) Emperor Hong Taiso, Son of Heaven, may he reign a thousand years. May this text serve its purpose and the Jade Dragon find value in its contents, humble and unworthy though they may be.
I was assigned by the Chief Minister, at word of the Dragon, to conduct a thorough investigation of cultural links and similarities between the various Xenos species documented within Human space. Initially I was skeptical of my ability to perform this function, Xenos societies are spread thin across the Galactic Arm and many are newer to space travel than Humanity (may it dominate the stars eternally) and uncertain of themselves around Humans. Many Xenos, if perhaps not all, hold some level of fear for Humanity, despite our generally good interactions (The Blunder of Theses III aside, and also a few other matters best left out of this text). As I traveled over the last decade between stars and civilizations I came to a gradual, and disturbing, conclusion. In this text I will lay out the knowledge I have gained, go into details cultural and anatomical of each species encountered, and submit the facts as I have learned them. First, however, I should like to discuss the conclusion I reached in my travels.
Humanity is the only species that naturally experiences, practices, and understands War as a concept. War is engrained in our history, indeed war lead to the founding of the Three Pillar Alliance that has seen Humanity reach for the stars. War led to the founding of the Yan Dynasty, the Restoration of the Romanov Legacy, and the creation of the American Federation. War has been practiced by Humanity as long as our history reaches. It is intrinsic, it is natural, and it is feared. Our ships carry weapons, our people carry weapons, our greatest historical texts go into great depths of detail on the subject.
This is not true for the Xenos species we have encountered to this point. In fact, every species encountered has been at one point or another utterly astonished by the concept, horrified in some cases and often unable to grasp the why of War. It's not to say that every Xenos species has been without internal conflict at some point, but those have oft been solved through diplomatic, or if violent, limited and personal means. If we examine the great works of entertainment of the Twentieth and Twenty First centuries of Earth we see a plethora of films, novels, and other forms of media dedicated to concept of invading aliens.
At no point did we consider the aliens may have no concept of war, let alone knowledge of how to invade a world. As it turns out, if there is a great threat devouring worlds and subjugating species, it may well have a Human face. This led me to another question or questions, I have not been able, my deepest apologies, to answer.
Why is war natural to the Human state of being? Why, among all the countless stars, among the races we have encountered, is Humanity the only species with war ingrained in its every historical development?
Why are there ruins of fallen Xenos civilizations spread across the Galactic Arm that show at least some signs of violent conflict, and yet only Humanity practices the conflict that could lead to such signs? These questions I will leave to other, greater Scholars, and to the Wisdom of the Jade Throne.
*Annotation: It should be noted by the reader that Dr. Zhou Xijin was one of the foremost experts on Xenos culture and his conclusions have been heavily debated both in the Washington Forum and the Kremlin but the Yan Dynasty remains silent and indeed, before his mysterious death five years ago, Dr. Zhou Xijin was essentially exiled from his home country, an exile passed down for dubious and vague reasons shortly after the publication of these volumes.
Taken from: The Three Pillars Alliance and Humanity's First Golden Age, Volume One. By Dr. Anderson Castelli.
The Three Pillars Alliance brought peace to our home planet, established the first Golden Age of the Human Race and catapulted us to the stars. Since its founding Humanity has begun to bend its solar system to its needs, has invented faster than light travel and communications, and has established its first colonies on other worlds. No account of this process, or of the Alliance as a whole, can be complete however without an account of how three States who were bitter rivals and enemies came to be close allies. It was not a quick process, nor an easy one, and it must be understood in its full to understand where we stand today and why there may well be stress fractures at the foundation of our civilization.
Global War
Before their current iterations the Three Pillars Alliance nations were known as The Russian Federation, the United States of America, and The People's Republic of China. They were rivals, often clashing diplomatically and economically, if not militarily. This ended with a massive aerial assault on Taiwan by the People's Republic of China. The unanticipated attack sparked immediate retaliation from US allies in the region, followed by the United States itself. The, expected to be quick by both sides, dragged out. Initial naval engagements gave China an early advantage but the arrival of more of the US fleet, plus the competency and power of its allied fleets eventually ended this advantage. What had started as an air war remained an air war until North Korea launched an invasion of South Korea.
The plan had been to use the North Koreans to distract allied forces long enough to secure Taiwan with a paratroop invasion. The plan failed miserably. North Korea's military was not capable of a sustained invasion and China was forced to divert its own forces, lest North Korea collapse entirely. From there the war dragged on, quickly gaining comparisons to a World War One but with better technology. The prolonged fighting ruined the global economy, sending China in particular into a massive economic tailspin.
Desperate to spread allied attention China launched additional land invasions of India and Vietnam. These went well initially, but eventually bogged down as well. Chinese airpower, once dominant in the region, deteriorated with repeated clashes with allied forces and expected help from Russia never materialized. China was forced to stand on its own and thanks to brutal fighting on land, casualties on both sides sky rocketed. Many believed China's vast manpower reserves would be the trump card it needed to bring Vietnam and Korea to heel but they failed to consider the culture of China and it's firm belief in Filial Piety. Worse yet, China' demographics combined with these filial beliefs meant that families of elders had long depended upon young sons to provide for their care, as well as expand the family and improve its economic status. Sons were dying in droves and the family unit cracked, in some cases, it broke entirely. The cracks would take some time to spread and went largely unnoticed by the Chinese government.
As the war with China continued Russia played its hand, relying on NATO's increasing need to pour more forces into the war. NATO armies in Europe were gradually withdrawn and redeployed. Eastern Europe was left open. Russia poured through.
Allied forces redirected resources once again in an attempt to fend off the Russian invasion as it threatened the doorstep of western Europe. The result was the fall of Taiwan. Vital resources for producing advanced technology fell into Chinese hands.
America Makes a Choice
Faced with a two front war, a depressed economy and the overwhelming need to save Asia over Europe, the United States made a decision that forever altered the course of events in the Old World. It withdrew. Already furious with European insistence that America foot most of the warfighting bill, most countries in NATO put in far less than they took out, the American government withdrew from Europe altogether. American forces pulled back to England, where some remained, while the rest left entirely. Europe was on its own.
Observers expected these forces to redeploy to China and the Middle East. They did not and the reasons would not become clear for some months.
Ignoring Russia allowed the United States to re-deploy its Atlantic fleet to the Pacific. There it shored up positions in Japan, secured Vietnam with a massive deployment of troops, and positioned two Aircraft Carrier Taskforces off the coast of North Korea. North Korea fell two days later but allied forces were tied up at the Chinese border, unable to penetrate the defenses there.
In the west Eastern Europe fell and the Germans, now commanding allied forces in Europe, completely abandoned Scandanavia in favor of re-deploying forces to the new border. This decision allowed Europe to finally stall Russian advances, especially with Russian forces increasingly tied up in a seemingly endless conflict with Finland, where invasion plans had essentially fallen apart the moment Russian forces crossed the border. Fighting on all sides dragged out significantly, casualties rose by the day and the global economy sank into a historic depression.
China Breaks
Stressed from increasing protests and citizen uprisings the Chinese military became increasingly ineffective, forced to put down riots as often as it fought the enemy. Moral sank in the army to an all time low. China didn't crack, it imploded. Driven by the intense pressures of the war and global depression a Chinese general by the name of Tsu Shin engaged in open rebellion. Tsu Shin seized North Korea and Taiwan from the government in a master stroke and had launched attacks across the Yalu River before the central government understood what was happening.
Military divisions from across the region abandoned their posts, either refusing to fight fellow Chinese or simply joining the General's cause. Suddenly faced with rebellion China shifted forces out of Vietnam and India to deal with this new threat, and immediately lost all territory it had gained in those regions after years of conflict. A surge led by American forces crossed into China from India and Indian forces swiftly overran poorly defended positions all across the border. An already bad war turned catastrophic for the People's Republic, which found itself in full retreat at every turn. Tsu Shin's rebellion found aide in the form of American military equipment and Japanese special forces. Cities fell, Chinese forces collapsed and the Bejing Riots began.
Despite these dramatic collapses, the Chinese government still held significant resources, one of those was a massive tank force it had held in reserve, unwilling to engage in open conflict with the infamous Abrams and Challenger battle tanks (though Challengers were increasingly deployed to Europe) when it could hold the allies at bay with the forces it had already deployed. These reserves were now put into the field against general Tsu Shin and for a time they rolled back much of the rebel's gains. When loyalists forces rolled into Hong Kong to secure the city from the rebellion, they changed the course of Chinese history forever.
Furious, exhausted, and of low morale the loyalist forces responded poorly when citizens of Hong Kong showed up to protest their arrival. Someone opened fire. The Massacre of Hong Kong began. The murder of uncounted thousands sparked the flames of rebellion into a raging inferno. More than half the remaining generals loyal to the central government defected to Tsu Shin. The only thing that saved the government of China from total and immediate collapse on all fronts was the sudden collapse of the allied front.
America Breaks Tired of war and depression the civilian populace of the United States had begun protesting the war nearly from the outset. The question raised by protestors was a simple one. Why are we dying for an island? Though the news was flooded with good war reports as China began to collapse, the damage had long been done. The election of 2052, held after decades of conflict and more than twenty years of global depression, was extremely contentious. For the first time in American history the Electoral College, bribed, coerced, and threatened by the sitting President, voted against the will of a population that had voted for a pacifist candidate. America exploded.
Riots unlike anything seen in decades swept across the United States and stressed American forces were deployed to quell the potential uprising. They refused. Whole regions of the country pulled their representatives from Congress and the country fractured into three warring factions. Washington recalled all forces from its campaign against China in a desperate bid to hold onto power. Upon their return, many of those forces defected to the other factions. Three way civil war ensued. With the withdrawal of American forces and support Tsu Shin's rebellion ground to a halt, unable to sustain prolonged campaigns without significant material support.
Russia and Europe Break
Encouraged by the success of civilian uprisings elsewhere, Russia and Europe were lit aflame as well. Already stressed beyond their ability to continue, the European governments collapsed. Civil wars, riots, and anarchy spread across the continent until every European nation dissolved into chaos. Russia was not positioned to take advantage of the situation, suddenly faced with their own similar uprisings. The President of Russia withdrew his forces from Europe and, in a desperate bid to preserve the nation, announced special elections. He was assassinated two days later by Alexandria Valach who seized power in a brilliant, if short lived, coupe.
In the following weeks and months Russia fractured along regional lines and Alexandria, operating from the Kremlin, was unable to secure the nation. She did, however, keep it from falling into total anarchy the way neighboring Europe had. Civil war ensued.
The Time of Chaos. Two Hundred Years of War
It was a miracle nuclear weapons never came into play, but perhaps limited use might have spared the world what happened instead. Engulfed in endless internal strife the world was swept into conflict for the next two hundred years. Alliances and governments changed, uprisings came and went, nation states were born and died. Famine, plague, and endless global depression pushed Humanity to its breaking point. The exact death toll of this time period is difficult to establish, so many records were lost, so much information and technology destroyed.
What we do know is an estimate. Nearly twenty percent of the global population died. This was a catastrophe unlike anything seen in Human history, indeed for many, it seemed like the end of Human history. It was not. While governments and economies collapsed, war, ever the natural ability of Humanity, was perfected. War cannot last forever, it must always end, eventually. Either people run out of the desire to fight, or resources run out, or military forces align themselves and secure enough territory to end a conflict.
The Rise of the American Federation
Two hundred years after its collapse, the United States was conquered by George Alexander Washington (most Historians contest this name as concocted to give him legitimacy). He established a Federal government in charge of a militarized State. He established a clear mission, the unity not of the United States, but of every American, under a single government. He started with a two front war, launching an invasion into what had once been Canada and Mexico simultaneously. Both nations were just as fractured as anywhere else and quickly succumbed to coordinated attack and the deployment of a new technology, the MW 1. Walking tanks made their first entry into war. The age of the Mech had begun.
Armed with new technology and a populace grimly determined to end war as a concept by conquering everyone who might fight back, the American Federation secured victory after victory. American forces swept through central America and launched an amphibious invasion of Chile and Peru. Both nations had been targeted as early sources of vital resources and were swiftly put to work mining these resources. Within five years of securing the former United States, President George Alexander Washington dominated the entire Western Hemisphere and declared the founding the American Federation. Each former nation was given representation in a Congressional body that could advise the President and pass laws, but could not interfere with military affairs and did not have the power of the budget.
Elected governors were given semi-autonomy over former nations and at long last peace and security descended on the Western Hemisphere.
The Romanovs Return
Who exactly Katarine Romanov was in reality no one can say. She claimed to be a direct descendent of the Romanov line, the last royal family of Russia. She was also the woman in charge of Moscow and a significant military force. From the onset of taking power in Moscow she declared herself Tzarina of Russia and engaged in a series of prolonged but well run military campaigns against former Russian territories. Encouraged by the success of the American Federation she took the unprecedented step of reaching out to the Americans. She made a deal with the American Federation, promising exclusive trade deals in exchange for one hundred Patton Class Mechs. Deployment the advanced machines and the equally advanced weapons on them changed the war for Russia entirely.
Katarine's Tzarist forces secured the Ukraine and plunged into Europe to secure Russia's border. Once Europe was secure she re-deployed her forces against the other Russian States and conquered each in turn. Katarine took direct command of her forces and won swift victories with brilliant strategic ability. Less than ten years after her rise to power Katarine secured the former Russian states and declared the Russian Empire. She met with the Americans again, establishing her promised trade deals and signing a Non-Aggression Pact, which was eventually replaced with a Pact of Friendship. The first two pillars were raised.
The Dragon Wakes
Desperate for an advantage, any advantage to bring peace to China, Tsu Tien, a descendent of General Tsu Shin, contacted Russia. Over a series of talks, which eventually included the American Federation, Tsu Tien secured the new weapons system that had brought peace to three continents. Following the example of Katarine Romanov, Tsu Tien declared himself Emperor, the Son of Heaven, the Ruler of Ten Thousand Years. His campaigns were less decisive and militarily brilliant as Katarine's, and less crushing than the wars that united the Americas, but they worked.
What the new Emperor lacked in military acumen, he made up for in administrative skill. He swiftly established one of the most potent governments in the world, smoothing the transition from war to peace time with an ability that more than bordered on brilliance. His administrative ability ensured a well run civilian infrastructure, an efficient military machine, and eventually the rise of the Empire of China as the most powerful economy in the world. He didn't stop with China. Encouraged by the successes of others he made contact again with the Russians and the Americans and proposed a new system, called the Three Pillars Alliance. They would divide the world, secure peace, and return prosperity to Humanity. All he asked for was most of the Pacific.
The Americans remained hesitant for several years but eventually relented and agreed to allow China's planned invasion of Australia. Finally, the war, or wars, were over.
All that remained was Africa. When no one could come to an agreement, rather than risk further conflict between the tentative allies, the Three Pillar Alliance agreed to leave Africa alone. This has had a significant impact on the development of global politics, especially in recent years, as powerful African nations arose and eventually joined the Three Pillar Alliance in space.
Though peace was established, and remains, tensions also remain. The Three Pillar Alliance is ultimately not a united front and arguments over mining rights are common. There are even skirmishes on moons and in mining regions, but these are ignored by the governments in exchange for maintaining peace. How long this alliance can last is anyone's guess, but if Human history is anything to go by, not forever.
Even with the heavy losses incurred by the people of Earth in their quest to become united, it became more and more evident as time went on that the planet itself simply did not have enough resources to support its ongoing population. The first forays into space beyond were within the Sol System, small half-mobile "bases" out in the asteroid belt, massive rigs that were built up around an area with good mineral resources, added to and expanded on and eventually turning into flotillas of linked vessels where miners began to carve out permanent lives and raise families.
Not to be outdone, the people of terrestrial Earth were reaching for the stars as well, looking for nearby worlds that might be habitable for a growing - and chafing - population. Given the nature of the world's political climate after the Three Pillars Alliance, there were many subsumed nations that were now simply part of another empire, but longed for the freedoms they had once held.
When the very first cryo-ships were developed by the Chinese Empire, they found a surprisingly ready and willing population among the people of what had once been Australia and New Zealand. For many of them, their early origins as a penal colony had not been forgotten, and there was little fear in venturing out again. Several hundred individuals made up the first wave of cryo-colonists, put into cold sleep and set to wake when they reached their destination. Naturally, the Chinese Empire wanted to maintain control of the offshoot colony, but with the distance between the new world and Earth, it didn't take more than a generation or two before the colony was more or less in their own hands.
The world was originally named "Fenghuang" or "phoenix" by the Chinese government establishing the colony, but the colonists themselves have taken to referring to it as "Ahi Tuarua," a Maori phrase meaning "second flame." Officially, both are used as names for this somewhat volatile world, no doubt confusing many representatives of other nations. The world itself has prominent volcanic features along the equator, but the areas beyond this have been fed by rich deposits and a swath of heavy jungle rings the continents above and below the volcanic equatorial zone. The fertile soil meant that colonists were able to provide for themselves fairly early on, and mineral deposits from the volcanic zone could be mined and sent back to always-mineral-starved Earth.
A burgeoning trade came into being - the colonists sent back resources to keep the Chinese Empire content and functioning, but the lumbering trade ships would return with more and more New Zealander and Australian expatriates. The recent advent of proper FTL communications and travel has been making waves in what was once an uncontested status quo - some feel that the Chinese Empire ought to have more control over their colony, others feel that the Chinese Empire should be removed from the equation entirely and the colony should take on its own sovereignty.
Name: Dorothy Emerson Gender: Female (she/her) Age: 43 Nationality: Australian
Appearance: Dorothy is a solidly built woman, with broad shoulders and rough hands from years of heavy labor. She has short, light brown hair that she keeps out of her face with a tied headband. She favors function over fashion, and can frequently be found wearing a vest and cargo pants with plentiful pockets.
Background: Though she planned on entering the military once she had finished her schooling, Dorothy was released from service before she ever saw combat. Seems that the military doesn’t take kindly to mouthy recruits with more curiosity than sense or respect for authority.
Luckily, the same attributes that saw her swiftly out of the barracks lent well to her next pursuit; off-world exploring. Setting off from her home planet of Ahi Tuarua, Dorothy made it her life’s work to record the natural wonders of various worlds, finding great success with her broadcasted tales of far-off lands. Viewership has dwindled over the years, but she continues her travels and recordings diligently.
Cory Carrick Race: Human Age: 27 Planet of Origin: Ahi Tuarua Education: B.S. Marine Biology, Corona Summit University (Ahi Tuarua), PhD Aquatic Biology (Xenoscience Focus), Corona Summit University (Ahi Tuarua)
Genotype: Modified After signing up for a medical experimentation trial to help pay her way through college, Cory ended up with genetic modification and augmentation. Even the scientists performing the trials are not entirely sure how to explain what happened to Cory. Her biology shifted somehow, and she now has the singular ability to become completely intangible. Much debate has happened on the nature of this, with some theories being that her cells are entering some sort of new quasi-state or that this is a psychic development or that her mass has shifted itself into some alternate dimension inaccessible to normal humans. No definitive answer has been given, but Cory has learned to deal with the changes as best as she can.
Employment: INITIA Project, Information Access Consultant Cory has been employed with a group known as the INITIA Project for the past year and a half. INITIA seems to focus on information management, and despite being a small organization, they are highly interested in funding research into areas that aren't being researched by others. Often, this includes researching the activities of their fellow humans. Being a corporation native to Ahi Tuarua, INITIA is particularly interested in the activities of the Three Pillars nations back on Earth, and what those activities may end up meaning on a universal scale. Despite Cory's recruitment being primarily for her genotype, her contract is also negotiated to allow her to explore potential xenoscience avenues where available. INITIA is as interested in potential alien remnants as anyone else is, after all - possibly even more so.
Initialization (Expo)
"Cory. You know how much we need you. I know you didn't ask to be, but you are a miracle. You can do something that almost no one else can, and you can't just waste that. Why spend your whole life looking for traces of aliens that might not exist any more when you could make a real difference to people who are right here?"
Cory shifted in her seat, one of the ubiquitous sanded wood chairs that were apparently highly valued back on Earth. On Ahi Tuarua they were just the same chairs everyone had - wood was cheap and plentiful, easier than producing plastics. That didn't necessarily make the chairs comfortable, though - but she had a feeling her discomfort wasn't entirely hardwood based. Project INITIA had been trying to recruit her for a while. They had new fancy titles for what they wanted every time, but it all amounted to the same thing - spy. They wanted her to go places others couldn't and find things out for them.
It was because of the gene therapy. She'd signed up for medical testing in college to help pay her way through. She'd expected things like test piloting a new headache medicine or taking part in sleep studies. She hadn't expected genetic augmentation - and she certainly hadn't expected it to work. Even with a background in aquatic- and xenobiology, she didn't really know what had happened or how, just that however it had worked, her genetic structure was now different enough from anyone else's that she had an odd ability to transmorph into something completely intangible. They were calling it a "projective psyche state" and there had been a lot of discussion about the phrase "mind over matter" because it was catchy.
Not that anyone really wanted all of this to be catchy. Hardly anyone knew about Cory's gene-ability, especially because she wasn't going around telling people. Sure, it came in handy when exploring underwater caves looking for traces of aquatic alien bioremnants, but it wasn't exactly the sort of thing to bring up on a first date or a job interview.
Not that there had been a lot of those lately, other than with INITIA. Cory almost wondered if the Project was squashing her applications, but that was a bit too much conspiracy theory, and realistically it probably had more to do with the fact that it was hard to find funding to send someone out to search for things that weren't there.
Cory - and other likeminded people - thought that was all the more reason to be searching. There had been aliens out there at some point, there were odd structures, crumbling away into dust, but obviously made by someone not human. There was - or had been - life out there, and even if it wasn't out there any more, she wanted to know where it had gone.
If INITIA had been interested in that, she would have signed up in a heartbeat - but they weren't interested in investigating potential alien life, only other human life.
She shook her head, not for the first time. "I understand, but it's not what I want to do with my life."
There was silence, for just long enough to be a little uncomfortable, then a tapping of fingertips. "Your mother remarried, didn't she? You have... two younger half-siblings."
Cory froze, not sure where this was going, but somehow sensing that she shouldn't like it. "...Yes."
"Twelve and... fifteen? Smart like you?" Cory did not dignify that with an answer. "I know that the... medical testing branch... ended up covering your collegiate studies in return for your continued participation. What about them? Can they afford a good education?"
Another uncomfortable shift that didn't have enough to do with the chairs. Ahi Tuarua might have been doing very well for itself, but getting employment anywhere off of the planet often required an education from a Sol-Certified university. Cory could see the idea behind it as being a good one - people didn't want to employ someone with a degree from Ganymede's Asteroid Shack & College Company, but Earth itself was in charge of the certifying, and in no particular hurry to certify too many places off of its own soil. As such, competition for those few certified college degrees was fierce - and the tuitions exorbitant. That was how Cory had ended up doing medical testing in the first place, trying to make her way through school without so much debt that she'd spend her entire life crippled by it.
The man across the table raked his hands through graying hair, then set his forearms on the table and leaned forward, folding his hands. "INITIA wants you, Cory. Or someone like you. I don't want to scare you, but I know we're both smart enough to know that someone out there is wondering if what worked with you has something to do with a genetic component, and if it would work with them. And we both know that will be their choice, when and if it's offered. We can't make it for them - but we can offer them different choices. INITIA offers a full scholarship to its members. You don't need that, but I can get that offer transferred, and I think they want you bad enough that they'd be willing to extend it to both of your half-siblings. Any college they can get in to, full tuition coverage. No strings, no need to sign up for the things you signed up for. Just... a good start on life. Whatever they want that life to be. I'm... I'm not a monster, Cory. I never wanted you to see me that way. Think about it. The paper's on the table."
He pushed himself back from the table, leaving her in the room with a tablet, a stylus, and the most important decision of her life - one that wasn't even really a decision at all. She sat there for as long as she could reasonably convince herself wasn't just stalling, then scrawled her signature across the empty space, knowing the system would register it almost immediately.
She was greeted with a smile when she left the room, and she wondered if it should mean something. His "Good to have you on board" wasn't really the words she needed to hear.
Anomaly 6.1.8.54B* was originally catalogued by a science vessel operating at the extreme range of then available flight technology. The ship had traveled under light speed (not to be confused with the FTL travel that would become available later) and the crew awoken from cryostasis. The ship had been dispatched from Earth in response to a discovery by an earth orbiting telescope, which had detected a 'shadow' in space through which fractional amounts of starlight emitted. Uncertain of what to expect and unable to identify the anomaly with the equipment on Earth, a ship with representatives from the three major powers was dispatched.
When it arrived the crew discovered a Dyson Shell one AU in diameter around a yellow main sequence star. Had this been the end of it the countless papers written on the subject would have been published in a heartbeat once transmitted back to Earth. This was not the end of it. In examining the Dyson Shell the crew soon discovered the cause of the 'escaping light' detected by the telescope. The Dyson Shell was broken. Not only was it broken, but it was clearly and undeniably broken by immense weapons fire that dwarfed any weaponry created on Earth.
The Anomaly, later to be called "The Shell" was declared top secret and all information later discovered, all papers written, everything detailing the Dyson Shell was locked away by the Three Pillars Alliance. The few species so far encountered by Humanity had no knowledge of war and it had become a common acceptance that in fact war was unique to Humanity. The presence of information clearly contradicting this was alarming and seen as a possible threat to public stability. As such the documents were locked away, the star system scrubbed from the data net and everything 'forgotten' by official record. The scientists involved in the project finished more than a decade of research on the shell and then quietly disappeared. Their ship was reported "tragically lost in transit" by the media.
Official records state Anomaly 6.1.8.54B* was a software glitch and the solar system declared off limits to further exploration as its star was reclassified into a Black Hole, thus far too dangerous to explore and navigate. The Three Pillars Alliance dispatched picket ships once FTL technology was made available. These ships ensure no outside traffic enters the system.
Yue Fei was discovered in an alien ship wreck on a world since classified by the Imperial Government. Once he awoke in his container it was discovered his memory was gone and the government worked quickly to brainwash him with a false background and bend what they saw as a significant weapon to the Chinese cause. Yue Fei believes himself to be a Human who volunteered for a government experiment that changed his DNA significantly. He is loyal to the Jade Dragon and is employed as a new military weapon.
Yue Fei controls bio-mechanical mechanized walkers. So far these have been deployed to a limited degree as the military experiments with his capabilities and the capabilities of their new technology. So far these actions have been limited to distant territories far from the prying eyes of the other members of the Two Pillar Alliance. Yue Fei expects to be deployed against potential military threats but primarily to be used to maintain security at particularly important or distant locations. Yue Fei's superiors have other ideas in mind...
Yue Fei is massively telepathic with a range and ability that hasn't been charted. Even with the suppression collar in place Yue Fei is easily capable of controlling his war machines from across a solar system. His other biological capabilities are unknown and at least one Imperial Xeno-biologist has speculated that Yue Fei is in fact a designed species, not an evolved one. Given the failure to deep scan Yue Fei or take a genetic sample, it's impossible to say how accurate such speculation is.
Polaris was never meant to operate for this long, from when her keel was laid to when she was released from the cradle shipyard that berthed her her destiny was set. Her duty was to sail by starlight until she reached a planet that could sustain her charges, and on that land settle her bones so that she may be used to construct the first city. Much of this could be seen in the sleekness of her design, room for the first settlers to expand into should the process of terraforming the new world be longer than expected, and a ready built ease for Polaris itself to be broken apart so the steel of her skin could be used for homes. She was built with redundancy in mind with an understanding that for the thousands aboard any minor disturbance to the plan, any unexpected variable could bring disaster. So, calculations were made, miles of steel and cables were inspected again and again for flaws, test jumps were made to calibrate her new engine, all to be sure that once Polaris left the Sol system nothing would be unaccounted for.
And, of course, be it due to the cross of American ingenuity, Chinese craftsmanship, and Russian design, or simply the skill of the handpicked crew nothing ill befell Polaris on her maiden voyage into the deep of the beyond. Spirits were high, colonists all dreaming of a new world to call their own, and it seemed fortune favored them as they left Earth behind. It took a month for Polaris to make her jump, and the mood was jubilant once she found herself transitioning back to real space above the world they wished to make a home of.
Namaka, the world had been named, was believed by the stargazers who had originally spied her to be a water world, but when Polaris’ shutters finally opened to the universe beyond, a vibrant green world shone. This was no real issue, of course, it simply meant that data would need to be updated to calibrate the telescopes. But, problems never ended at one. Polaris’ probes offered the colonists a more disturbing fact, Namaka was already full of life.
They weren’t advanced by any means, perhaps half a millennia still from discovering the combustion engine, but this remained an unexpected complication. A debate raged between the crew and colonists, some argued that the plan should be followed with another planet in the system, others that they should return to Earth and wait for the stargazers to find another planet they could one day call home. With consensus being an ever ethereal thing, a line was sent back to Earth explaining the situation, and a response was received.
A world with an atmosphere so conducive to human life would be big enough for one more species, wouldn’t it?
Polaris never responded.
[Adrift]
For the first decade of her life, Polaris was alone, she was her own city, her own nation, her own destiny. Polaris moved often, and for the colonies she became her own sort of myth. In some tellings, she was adrift lost in the dark between distant stars, in others a place where vagabonds gather, or for the fanciful she was a ghost. However, at some point in her travels Polaris gained a companion, Groundsheer, a ship built to devour rock. Groundsheer lacked the elegance of Polaris’ design, lacked the offerings of size and space, but what Groundsheer offered was indispensable. Groundsheer was constructed with the ability to capture and deconstruct asteroids, and for Polaris this meant access to things that were always sorely needed for the nomadic ship, raw materials and ice.
How many ships now serve the fleet is known only to Polaris, and she has no desire to admit her strength to the universe beyond. Her vassals can be seen often in the docks of the colonies, merchant vessels appearing within colony worlds to sell their wares, or cargo ships fattening themselves on the supplies necessary to keep Polaris operating when she was never meant to be adrift for this long.
[Home]
For those of Polaris home is not land and a sky, nor the stability of the day to day. It flows with the people around you, in the shape of the changing fleet and the place of the individual within. So, for those from Polaris home is often more than simply returning to the fleet for home can be found wherever two might meet. Perhaps it is simply an outcome of their nomadic lifestyle in a place so inhospitable to life, the people of Polaris are generous. Willing to provide aid to stranded ships, or part with supplies to a stranger in need, for home is wherever they find themselves so all are their guests, even if that person will never see Polaris herself.
And all Polaris will ask is that is that should they ever need the same then the favor be returned to them.
It’s a cold dark place, the universe, and few understand that as fully as the people of Polaris.

Place of Birth: Polaris, above a world with turquoise seas
Fleet Operations Core of Discovery ”Eye of the Star” They are the vanguard of Polaris, the eyes of the fleet who exist to chart the unknown and be certain of safe passage for when the fleet relocates. Though, if rumors are true then the Core of Discovery also serves as a means for Polaris to keep track of the machinations of the governments of Earth. Though it's hard to say how much truth there is to the rumors, talk has always been loose about the fleet.
Specialization: For the fleet, Cilla explores and catalogs the unknown so some days this means that she acts as a guide and others she might be a cartographer. Polaris maintains extensive records over every world she has touched and every thing of interest that she has seen, so it is on the backs of Cilla and her fellows that those records are made. Like most nomads of the fleet, Cilla is trained in the many sorts of system and physical bypasses that might be useful to limp a broken ship back to safe harbors, but she is no trained engineer by any means.
Purpose It is hard to fully grasp the size of Polaris, she is measurable, sure, you can mark down her length or the thickness of her walls, but in the minds of her people?
When she was sixteen Cilla joined her parents on an expedition down to a world of vibrant purples and deep blues. It was her first time standing upon solid ground, breathing air that wasn’t recycled by industrial filters. It was a strange experience for a child of the stars, one that left her with an insatiable curiosity to see all of the oddities that filled the universe with color, and all the strange creatures that the pull of evolution would give rise to. As she grew, her goal became her livelihood, she was an explorer who documented the places she could reach all so her people might follow in her wake to experience the same wonders that she felt when touched by the light of a foreign star.

Name: Mori Species: Primordian Gender: Female appearance Age: Unknown
Primordians are a species of advanced unicellular organisms that live as part of a massive collective. In their natural state they appear as a gelatinous slime of base origin, much like what one might imagine a primordial ooze to look, hence the name they were given. They were first discovered on what was thought to be an uninhabited planet. Imagine the surprise when pools of translucent slime began moving and communicating.
Before the day humans first set foot on their home, Primordians were in fact simple and primitive. They knew nothing beyond the boundaries of their home, only the mundane tasks of daily life. Human thought and culture opened the Primordians to a whole new realm of possibilities and existence, filling them with a desire to learn and expand, to advance and evolve.
One is all and all are one. Primordians have no personal identity within the collective, so names hold no personal significance in their existence. Mori is a unit, or hive as some choose to call them, set apart to serve as a sort of ambassador of the collective. Humans and other species seem to have difficulty communicating with species that are vastly different, so it was their choice to give the unit an identity. Likewise the collective saw fit to present themselves in a more favorable form, choosing the visage of the fairer sex to make themselves more aesthetically pleasant.
It is taxing to maintain such a form for extended time periods, so to aid in this matter a special suit was designed for Mori. It essentially performs as an exoskeleton, in addition the suit also helps maintain adequate hydration, ideal temperature, and filters out excessive light. Primordians have proven to be very cooperative at allowing their species to be studied, so it is much easier to accommodate their needs.

Primordian
Xeno species overview
Primordians are unicellular organisms that live together as a collective, their natural form having a translucent to almost transparent slime like appearance. Primordians are highly complex and each one lives approximately 1 Earth year. They thrive on organic matter in hot humid climates, however they are highly adaptable, so given enough time and knowledge it’s possible for them to learn and evolve to live under less than ideal conditions.
Primordians feed by secretion of a highly concentrated acid that swift and efficiently liquefies matter. Though it is possible for them to liquefy inorganic matter, it is of little to no benefit to their survival. When food is abundant they can be voracious, when scarce more conservative, however they tend to only consume what is necessary for normal functions.
Primordians exist as both male and female, reproducing through conjugation once they near the end of their life expectancy. They can and will reproduce out of necessity if required, and can do so at an alarming rate under the right conditions.
Due to their slime like consistency, Primordians can readily shape themselves into various forms and shift from solid to liquid. There are some limitations and drawbacks, since doing so requires energy that is otherwise used to sustain each cells existence and benefits the collective as a whole. This is most apparent in transition to a solid form which requires the sacrifice of many cells. Such losses are deemed acceptable so long as it benefits the collective. Each cell will eventually be replaced.
Primordians can see, hear and speak. They are very sensitive to vibrations, able to distinguish speech patterns and mimic them in turn. Visually they are sensitive to light. In their native habitat before interaction with humans, they only used ocelli to detect light. However having gained knowledge of human anatomy, they have since learned how to synthesize simple eyes, allowing them to see on a level comparable to human vision.
Primordians cannot survive long as individual cells, however they can separate into units. Each unit can operate independently from the collective for an indefinite period. Whether separated into multiple units or united as a massive organism, they continue to behave as a collective, yet they are able to carry out individual tasks. Their ability to absorb and process information is astonishing to say the least. Knowledge is passed throughout the collective through contact. As to if there is a limit to their mental capacity, that has yet to be determined.
Before humans landed on their home world, Primordians had no history, no culture, no identity. They were a primitive organism living in coexistence with their environment. Since the start of human interaction, they have flourished and evolved at a mind boggling pace. Their desire for knowledge seems insatiable, soaking up every bit of information they receive like a sponge. It is quite possible, and to the fear of some, that Primordians may even know us better than we know ourselves in time.
To date, Primordians remain peaceful and cooperative. Still, our presence has no doubt interfered in the course of their natural evolution. One cannot help but wonder what further effects our influence will have on their species into the future. Only time will tell, just as history has recorded our many triumphs, as well as our mistakes and failures.
PIXIE is the current project created through a government funded program to develop an advanced artificial intelligence. Most of the information regarding the program and those involved remains restricted, accessible only by personnel holding Level 5 and S security clearance. Available data is limited to the PIXIE prototype specifications and general articles concerning aetherite.
PIXIE 1st Generation A.I. Height 152.4cm Weight 90kg Frame model 019 titanium alloy Dynamic stabilizers Shielded aetherite core Carbon Fiber exoskeleton Integrated sensory nodes Full spectrum optics Wide range vocal emulator Short wave bio scanner
Many have endeavored to create artificial intelligence, however true success has always remained just out of reach. No matter how complex the processors, how massive the memory, the various attempts have always been limited to the developers programming capabilities. None have ever been able to exceed beyond this plane, advancing only within the boundaries of human technology and limited by available resources; however that has changed with the discovery of a new element named Aetherite, at least theoretically.
Aetherite was discovered during planetoid mining operations. Its properties seem very similar to that of silicon, however the exact composition is still unknown. Aetherite is characterized by its pink translucent crystalline composition and ethereal glow, from which its name was derived. Little more is known of this rare element as mining operations were suddenly halted and the planetoid was seized under government control. It’s rumored that the miners stumbled across something else that prompted the seizure, though this has never been confirmed.
It is currently accepted that mining operations were stopped due to a condition now known as Ether Sickness. Released studies of Aetherite state that the element emits a form of radiation which causes neurological abnormalities under prolonged exposure. Further information states that aetherite radiation cannot be detected by conventional means, as such the element was labeled as hazardous and restricted from private sector mining operations.
Due to its rarity and the lack of available and updated information, most people are unaware of Aetherites existence, much less any potential uses.
Name: Jackie Full Name: Jimmy Amy Caroline Kyle Ivan Ema, the first six humans Jackie came to know Age: 20 Height: 3 ft 2 Gender: Lutumul (currently equipped as male) Physical description: light brown and black fur, humans have described it as a raccoon like especially coloring around the eyes as if it had a mask. It's black stripes are larger then most Lutumul stripes and are glossier do to much care taken in cleaning itself and maintenance. Eyes are a vibrant green, and a small chunk of left ear is missing. Jackie has a number of piercings in the right ear, six to be exact.
Specific attire: A Lutumul may change their wardrobe but usually have some form of uniformity. Something they stick to such as how a human might always have a Hoodia they like or piece of jewelry. For Jackie its the small name tags of those first six humans, the Lutumul will almost always have these on its person.
Bio: Jackie was adopted into a crew as the ship crashed into a asteroid inhabited by Lutumul. They eventually found Jackie at approximately 13 with no pack. From there they helped Jackie learn English and human technology. Being of a new pack Jackie also became a bit of a kleptomaniac looking to run around and take all the stuff it could to help the new pack. This also lead tona fair bit of development of a bad reputation.
In the last year give or take Jackie came across Dorothy. The critter took a liking to the woman and the ideas of exploration. Which has lead to the engineer now also wanting to document it. Well to make a documentary. Lutumul are not known for history keeping and note collecting, movies are exciting though to Jackie! So the Lutumul has found a desire to film and photograph all of the things! To hoard all the cameras and lighting equipment it may need! Jackie may not have an eye for cinematic angles or make up, but damn if the little thing isn't going to try.
Species Lore: (Art by Katpride who helped me brainstorm on these Lil lads <3)
The Lutumul Home World Lutumite: The Lutumul though good with technology hasn't expanded necessarily all that far. While populating other world or asteroids near their home world its population is largely founded on Lutumite. It's a largely forest world that's populated by more predators and omnivores then simple prey. The formation of packs was how Lutumul survived at the start, their ability to learn lead to technology to help with survival. From survival came an evolution of more cities and technological advancements. Lutumite is a dwarf planet populated by countless small cities built in trees these communities are usually not wide so much as stacked atop eachother. To human simplification it'd be like small towns layered on top eachother to be closer to a small city. Such cities usually have a mix of developments, it'll be a hodge podge of wood work stone work and metal work. To be more precise that mixture is in everything, a home built by one generation in wood that next generation was fixed by some one who loves the shine of metal, but then a neighbor who moved in thought stone work was superior. There's a lack of uniformity and pattern to what any Lutumul building looks like, almost no uniformity would exist in how a city is designed, and it would barely look similar at all from city to city. This chaotic way of building has further changed by the introduction of and o other races. Inspired by others technologies and cultures more changes are made. Similarly a Lutumul is much smaller and so a Lutumul familiar with other races or wishing to be will try and change the size of a home, resulting in a size difference in structures as well. From homes to important pack buildings they can range from no more then six feet tall to twenty because they don't get over four feet tall, and some only hearing of races think them giants (compared to them).
Biology: A Lutumul is a when adult 2 to 4 foot tall bipedal creature often looking to humans like a mix of monkey and raccoon. It is important to note that most of them usually are an average of 3 feet tall those taller then 3.5 feet are probably a mutation or half breed of some kind. This is a growing trend in their society one probably wouldn't find a Lutumul over forty of such heights. They are furry creatures with a wide range of colors, though those colors are meant to blend in with the wildlife. Browns and blacks are way more common, with things like reds and greens being a bore rare. A Lumul is usually only going to live up to sixty years, the oldest of Lutumul is legendary hunter Uugu found in the city of Uugumul even now, who is sixty six years old! Their eyes are sort of small and beady noses sort of scrunched into the face and mouths wide. Though the teeth are tiny more pointy nubs then fangs, some off world Lutumul have bigger teeth but it takes time for such changes to come along.
The senses of a Lutumul are elevated for surviving on a predatory world. A vision of these small creatures can usually see clearly up to three hundred meters, and can adjust to most lighting conditions. It's not perfect night vision but it's usually not going to fail them. Hearing is relatively sharp, one needs possibly to hear a slither in the grass so as to not get bitten! Such hearing isn't as uniform though with more technology comes more loud noises and so it's not uncommon for one to be a bit hearing impaired. Smell is probably their strongest sensory ability, they have to be able know good meat from bad, dangerous berries from consumable ones and to know if bigger hunters are possibly after them. A Lutumul can usually tell if food is good for them and what's around them for three hundred meters. With a further ability to track a person or animal if the trail is recent, the trail usually going bad after twenty four hours. Taste is a bit more of a muted sense, as scavengers and foragers they are not as prone to caring about pallet. They've come to know combinations are better, that hot food tastes nicer, but they are by no means a culinary expert of a species. A lutumul is often just as willing to eat the wrapping paper with a candy bar as they are to bite down on a hot meal. Touch these critters have no real special differences here other then having surprising grip strength meant to help climb. The only real distinction in touch is their tails are as dexterous and strong as any other limb helping them hold or lift things.
Internal biological functions are most distinct in digestive and immune system better used for breaking down and surviving whatever food they swallow. It's not perfect by any means poisonous are likely to work on them just as well but foods alone usually won't get to them. They're lungs are some what small for their size they don't need as much oxygen to function. They are heavy sleepers and prone to hunger, their biology not likely to take to eating or sleeping less to get by. Intellectually they are quick to learn things doing best in sciences and creativity, they don't do well with things like history as much. Survival and expression has become more fundamental in their development then record keeping. Perhaps most significant on a scientific level is their reproduction organs, a hermaphrodite physiology being how they evolved. A Lutumul doesn't really factor in "gender" for themselves they are just Lutumul. These critters will change in those organs as the pack needs, with those in twenties usually being with female parts more often as the pack needs and older ones being more male to make sure offspring comes from the more healthy and youthful Lutumul. When outside of a pack it usually will change to reflect which ever is less prominent. Even though they may not be looking to reproduce this is just how they seem to function.
Communication: While a Lutumul can speak other languages its usually a bit choppy and distorted being more animal adjacent a growl or hiss might sneak into pronunciation if it can. Their own language of course being more sounds then "words". Lutumul have also adopted some mannerisms. The tail salute, as they learned of humans they developed a salute with their tail this is to them a very respecting gesture. The ha, the mouth opens as wide as it can before snapping shut in a sort of mock laugh, this is their rudest gesture the most scoffing at someone else possible. The loud chew, they aren't exactly the cleanest or silent of chewers being more chomps ans saw motions, they have learned that other races don't often like chewing sounds though, so to annoy people at times they will be as noisy about this as possible. Usually as their way of telling someone to be silent as if they don't want to hear it. And of course the ear droop, while ears aren't to large they do move usually pointing up if flat it means annoyed and if down usually means sad.
Relationships: Lutumul are pack animals by nature. They usually are not alone, they will find eachother and form groups almost any time it is possible. When it isn't they will try and latch onto other groups anything to not be on its own. This need for a pack means it will usually also struggle to move away from places and if it does look to use technology to stay in touch with a pack. There are usually two kinds of Lutumul those who will see a place as theirs and anyone there as apart of the family old or new, or who travel and while maybe having a smaller pack think almost everyone they meet is apart of the pack. When it comes to romantic ties it is usually a bond for life. If the pack needed to grow they might open themselves to others but generally speaking they will grow closest to one other individual . It is not uncommon for a Lutumul who loses their significant other to end up seeking death as well rarely being able to move on.
Technology: Lutumul are clever and take to learning sciences quite well. They however do this more by pack then some sort of educational practice. Because of this most devices they make or work on will have an asymmetry to them. Some have often described the machines of theirs as something that almost looks like it shouldn't work. Beyond this is a focus on more bulky design then sleek. As a species that foraged scavenged and would hunt when it did move to tools and engineering it wanted it to endure. Something more solid and blocky was better then tiny and frail.
Habits: They are drawn to stuff. Given their nature they have a tendency to hoard, and to stash things away. Not wanting to be wasteful of something that might help they will pocket all that they can essentially. A Lutumul also doesn't usually have much order. It wants to have its things and it wants to hold onto why they have them, for a Lutumul clutter is a home. Stealing warm things, not all Lutumul are thieving scheming little fellas but all Lutumul like to stay warm. It is possible if someone is missing blankets or socks it's because the ship or metal buildings are to cold so a Lutumul at least tried to "borrow" what will keep them warm.
Music and Art: Much like their technology the other ways of expression are disorderly by nature. It's not until recently they bothered to record things or for adhering to a pattern. It's more how they feel at the timemor care to perform then anything intentional. While a Lutumul may try and say draw a landscape it will oftennbe colored wild different or change to be more fantastical anything to sort of go out of the lines.
Hunting: Lutumul are protective and defensive of their packs but not particularly violent. Most of their experience there is by way of hunting other species. They favored specifically developing harnesses or clothing to help with climbing and sticking above hunters on Lutumul. Leaned towards weapons with range to help stay clear of the bigger predators. And when they do go for things like a hunt it's in groups. As individuals and up close they usually don't fair well.
Diplomatic Beliefs: Lutumul will usually lean one of three ways, possessive extensive or collaborative. Possessive for some Lutumul they will feel like they have a plentiful enough family so they will want stuff for family. Deals and discussion to chase after more belongings to help a pack. Extensive will be the desire to extend the family and pack. It won't be about profit but making more connections with people. Lastly is Collaborative looking to mix those two. Lutumul are not really to fixated on history or religion its roughly just which of these three ideals they think will help their clan.
