She was moving a little. A little more as time passed on. That was a good sign, right? Of course. She would pull through. She could do this. I have faith. Her eyes were starting to open a little.
She was crying again. I moved forward a little before stopping.
Who was she talking about?
I stared on as she spoke, as she sobbed and muttered through her hiccups and caught breathes. What was I going to do? What does anyone do in this situation? She must be out of it. Do I call a doctor? Do I call Dr. Holt? Assuming he would make it all the way out here for a paltry sum of cash I could muster, on top of whatever hospital bills I may be stuck with. I had to forget about that right now. Right now, Aster needed someone.
And, if she thought that someone was Xi or not was up to her clouded mind.
But I could return a simple gesture of kindness, one that she well-deserved several times over. A hug. I got up and I reached over as best I could, carefully hugging her. Maybe I was overstepping my bounds. Maybe this was inappropriate or maybe I should have really, really called a professional.
I don't care. I would wait, almost wincing a little, unsure if Aster fought me off or not or became too surprised at the sudden movement.
And, if nothing else happened, I would speak. I spoke without the use of the NanoSym's voice modulation capabilities. Just my voice, clear and pure.
"It's okay. You're going to be okay. You won't-."
I took a deep breathe.
"No one is going to hurt you again. Not ever again. Just rest and everything will be okay. Just rest."
