It wasn't hard to make time for this particular patient. Normally there would be at least some sort of waiting list, but Alvis had decided to forego that for this particular case- as he sometimes did when things seemed particularly urgent. The clinic was busy, of course, and Alvis himself often took on more patients than his colleagues, but that was a personal choice. He almost liked being overworked. The stress never got to him in the same way it did with most other people. He understood why some of them would get burnt out and take extended breaks, and he certainly allowed this to happen, but he himself never once took a leave of more than a long weekend or so. Perhaps that was out of enjoyment for his work, or perhaps it was out of a paranoid sense of duty. Either way, it didn't really matter. Long days were common, and he had trained himself to stay sharp throughout every one of these sessions.
It was only in the short break between them that his fatigue ever showed.
He had been like this for a couple of days now- as fine as ever when facing patients, but completely hollow when left alone. If he could take a nap at his desk, he would. If he could feel awake by downing a gallon of coffee, he would. The only thing he wouldn't do was take a break. Things had been unusually hectic over the past few months. Catastrophes that sent more patients his way, a hurricane which he was caught in the middle of, a meeting with a terrorist who (he heard) was then allowed to speak at a university... all of these things had been headaches as they happened, but Alvis's work was never the hardest as things happened. The aftermath was always what stung.
Not that he wasn't familiar with preventative measures, of course. That was part of his job as well- and it was likely what Jacob had in mind when he sent Gerard over for an emergency meeting. A parasite, instability, the likelihood that he could completely lose control with disastrous consequences... Alvis was in for a long afternoon, that was for sure. He doubted he could even do much if the situation had already progressed far enough, but he wasn't going to tell either Gerard or Jacob his doubts about that. He couldn't exactly see him any earlier, could he? It was best for him to just focus on what he could do now, and hope it was enough to mitigate at least some of the damages.

"Gerard Burns?" The receptionist called, "Dr Holt will see you now- his office is just down there."
