THE SPEEDBLITZ CLUB
Many enhanced humans who could otherwise find easy work using their superhuman strength for manual labor had found themselves unable to do so on account of union settlements made to protect the employment status of ordinary humans. The ebb and flow of politics strengthened and relaxed these restrictions in equal measure, if not in even frequency. Likewise, guarantees that one's fellow workers would be fully human - even if they weren't using their powers on the job - sometimes pushed enhanciles to the brink of society.
Ones with flashy powers could pick up advertising deals or go into work as professional superheroes, if they could handle the dangers that entailed - usually, more organized and ruthless supervillain groups would seek to stamp out these c-listers, or make public examples of them. The culture which surrounded superpowers was naturally distinct from anything that had preceded it. There were no analogies, no experience to fall back on - not really. Only a new frontier. And while some gifted superhumans could win the proverbial lottery with their abilities, others chose to vent their frustrations - and seek prize money - in less mainstream ways.
Superpowers seemed built for conflict, after all.
No more than two blocks from Yankee Stadium lies the other great entertainment venue of the Bronx - one much more secretive, and quickly - unbelievably - growing more lucrative. The Speedblitz was founded during the Great Recession by out of work supers, and its only grown from there. The prime location of this illegal underground meta-fighting ring led to a rapid rise in its reputation as a year-round opportunity for prize money, notoriety, and a chance at getting hired as super-muscle...or death.
Now owned and operated by the Mettle Gang that's asserted control of the Bronx underground, the Speedblitz has experienced an influx of financial backing and muscle, allowing upgrades to its in-house security, the ringside experience, and potential prize money.
The main stage is a circular arena with a 30 ft diameter. The 'mat' is made up of repurposed carbon flexmaterial peeled off the bottoms of space shuttles. This composition allows super-fast combatants to move without destroying the floor. A translucent cylindrical blast shield encases the combatants during battles, a flexible material comparable to bulletproof glass, but for superhuman fists. Holographic displays are frequently projected on the exterior of the blast shield, visible only to the onlookers, not the combatants. Enormous screens that take up entire walls depict the fights with next-level details, including replays of devastating hits. An on-site medical staff is always prepared to do what they can to help out a fighter, but just as in normal, legal boxing, death is never far away.
One-on-one fights are the most common, but Friday night is duo night, and Saturdays are free-for-alls in the spirit of Crumple Zone, the yearly mass gladiatorial event set up and torn down over the course of a single fight. Outside the ring, refreshments are available for spectators, usually named after infamous super-criminals. Non-fight entertainment is common as well. Security is strong when it comes to both guests and participants - nobody wants to see the place cleared out by feds, and nobody wants to watch a psychic walk into the arena and win a fight instantly. Combatants are carefully vetted to make sure that their powers are oriented around physical combat.
Mettle, who solidified his reputation at the now-infamous Crumple Zone '21, is now chief financier for the Speedblitz. He makes regular appearances as a spectator, usually from his own private office situated at the second floor of the club, with a view of the arena down below. He's been known to offer meetings to victors of particularly impressive bouts - an offer most people can't refuse.
