Wave after wave after wave crashed against the shoreline, washing away dunes and dunes of sand meant to act as protective barriers for the homes that lined the beach. Continuous wave action had a tendency to break down even the mightiest of fortresses. An unforgiving chilling wind suddenly blew from the west, bringing with it bigger waves and a raging sea. The sentry mounted atop the lighthouse blew the horn. Moment's later the townhall lit up and the alarm was sounded.
The rumbling of the Earth signified the arrival of the heavy machinery. They submerged into the ocean below and began excavating tons of sand to bring ashore. If they were to survive the night and the storm, they had best do everything within their might, if they wanted to survive the night and the storm. The children hugged their blankets tight while the men set about stacking up sacks of cement in areas most vulnerable, the power house and the accommodations.
"I know the construction is important, father, but can't we stop that for a single day in order to cast massive blocks to line up our coastline?" A 17 year old Edmund sat at the ham radio communicating with the operators and the technical staff. The technical staff were working to secure the power house from an imminent threat this storm brought. t "The construction is our colonies lifeline. We can't abandon now that there's only a few more moons left." The father Hearst was a big bald man, looking at some construction schematics. "So you don't care about our men dying?"
"THEY ALL KNOW WHAT THEY SIGNED UP FOR EDMUND." He swatted the papers on the table angrily. "THE FEDERATION ALREADY PAYS US COLONY WORKERS 50% MORE THAN EVERYONE ELSE. WE KNOW THE RISKS. THAT'S WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO."
"Except the Federation won't equip us with an interplanetary ship. We rely on fucking raiders for sustenance father!" It frustrated Edmund because the raiders asked for compensation in the form of favors around the colony and fuel, precious federation commodities.
"They take the risks. We get our supplies." The old man replied. It was a miracle they hadn't swiped any of the goods yet. Though Hearst always consigned negligible amounts per round to keep the interest of the raiders low.
Flood Water tore down the shore-line barrier and reached the first of the three perimeter barriers encircling the colonies living sector. It broke down roughly 40% of the zinc barrier. Fortunately, the waves didn't reach any of the housing units.
Waves crashing against the outer barrier sent them catapulting over 200 feet in the air, spraying saltwater over the buildings in the buildings in the vicinity and this gives the buildings closer to the shore a dark brown rusty look compared to further inland.

There is a part of town now abandoned due to it being hit multiple times in the past three years. It's a graveyard of rusted buildings, torn rooftops and half filled by water with all manner of sea creatures, crabs and fishes inhabiting the dwellings. No one goes there anymore and its been sectioned off since with the construction of a new barrier wall. In a way its existence provides extra security to the town since those old structures act as wave breakers in times of storm and strong winds.
And when the weather permits, you find a ton of locals flock there in order to reap of the bounties it has brought. Edmund watched the scene from where he sat in the sixth floor cafeteria, the tallest structure in their town. People with their fishing gear camping on half submerged buildings with their fishing rods cast out into the murky waters below.
There are a lot of sleepless nights here on Nebula-982135A. Our work camp is located on the eastern shore of Island Delta- along what would normally be considered beach. Because the survey teams have deemed the areas inland unsuitable for life plus construction was supposed to take there. That and logistical reasons also don't make it feasible to have our camp placed far from where we are supposed to work. How nice would it be to be located in the fucking orbital station, Evelyn wondered as her eyes suddenly creaked open to the sound of crashing waves and the rattle that followed. She, being one of the firsts, and being of senior staff level, was afforded an apartment to herself. Little did she know that at the turn of season she was going to take the brunt of storms and whatever else was out there in store for them. Her building was located at the far end, quite closed to the abandoned area, the ghost town. Her row of buildings faced the harshest winds and constant floods. Many a times, she'd had to bar the door just to stop the water from coming in.
And now she faced another problem. Due to constant weathering, the floorboards of her apartment were like paper now, ready to just give way and make a large hole underneath, allowing for creepers to enter her apartment. Rubbing her eyes, she prayed in her heart, prayed that the barrier would hold and that she wouldn't have to face the waters.
She hated this life though. She hated it a lot. She hated it because 1) She was all alone here and 2) She was not getting any increment in position or salary. This, Evelyn hated. Plus, it had now been seven years since she had started living like this, world after world, star system after star system. And she's been to multiple worlds in this star system now, on various projects, and for more than five years now. But apparently, the owners of the star system loved their work and continued to hire them. It was good, stable payment, doesn't mean she had to like it though.
She picked up her phone from beneath her pillow to look at the time. 2:30 AM?! "Are you fucking kidding me?" She got up though because apparently she needed to pee. So after doing that, she dragged herself out of her room and across the living room towards the exit, to creep a look out. Outside was a corridor that extended left and right, with roof that did not go far enough, the rain just came crashing onto her face. Given enough time, it tend to flow into the apartment through the bottom. Fortunately, it was not raining at the moment...so, hugging her nightgown, she opened the door wide before heading out. From her seventh story apartment, it gave her a clear view of the barrier between the new camp and the old abandoned camp. Buildings two story and lower were already fully submerged. All sorts of debris filled the murky waters there, along with the sea creatures of course. Nothing of concern emerged from there though. What was of concern came from the east facing barrier. Waves crashed into it non stop.
