Endless white…
Where to begin… Well, where do we begin? We could start with natural cycles, some years in a row it's unbearably hot, the next few will be terrifyingly cold. We could start with horrid pollution damaging and twisting these cycles horrifically and cause unimaginable travisties and unexpected circumstances. We could start with weapons capable of shaking the earth and causing disasters on an unprecedented scale. Perhaps it was all of it combined in some nightmarish stew created by god or the devil himself. All we know is it began to snow one day and never finished…
Now, this snow wasn't a light dusting that shuts down a southern state city, it wasn't something that would startle a northerner trying to shovel his driveway, nay it was a snow something Biblical. The snow came, and it came, and it came. It swallowed everything it touched, small buildings were simply gobbled up and skyscrapers were buried well over half. Hell it even snowed in places you wouldn't expect from deserts to jungles. Of course with all of this snow life had some problems; most of mankind's inventions were quickly rendered useless, lush and bountiful fields of food were crushed, and animals quickly died off that were not suited for these harsh conditions. Of course however as nature does, it survived, barely but it did. And somehow, (perhaps unfortunately) so did humans.
Now it's difficult to accurately judge how long it has been snowing but best guesses are pushing it hundreds of years since the last official recording. Of course this big jump in years has caused some changes in people's mentality and philosophies. At first people acted as they usually would in a crisis, helpers helping, looters looting and idiots being idiots blaming everything else but them. Of course after some time helpers stopped helping, and looters had nothing left to loot, and idiots… well you'll never get rid of those. People found out that central governments and major authority was no longer reliable, considering not just lack of members but also lack of accessibility. People began to form groups themselves. And that's where we begin to get closer to where we are.
First it was friends and families making teams for survival. Then it was townships and cities coming together to make their survival chances greater. Now with more and more snow these townships and cities have evolved from just forming a central body to some people's entire worlds. Cities formed inside tunnels and remnants from the old world. Different dialects, accents, even languages formed within them. Basic to bizarre religions were created to answer questions no one could, often with strange rituals. Each of these new civilizations of course, obviously, has their own unique way of operating their own systems in something similar to factions. some factions get along well with each other, trading, helping, surviving, co-existing, other factions… well… humans are humans after all…
Where are we now? Well you belong to the community of the Ikeans. A group of people who have been living in the caves and chasm of Ikea for generations. Compared to some groups they are doing alright, Geothermal heating granted by the old Sherpas, comfortable bedding (albeit it was a bit hard to assemble), a shop where your people have been building and fixing for years and even a communal cooking area. Your home is rather peaceful, for the most part, your community believes in the old Sherpas, the founders who originally founded the ikeans many generations ago, and set the groundwork for what you have today. Of course you have neighbors, some immediate ones that is, to the south you have the mainstays, a group similar to yours but they do not believe in your founder and instead believe in something known as the great IBM. While no one from your civilization has ever seen the great IBM they assure you it exists, they do not hate or love the Ikeans they… tolerate to say the least. Your neighbors to the far north are much less nice. The feudalists they claim themselves to be. A rather militaristic group of people who worship whoever their god king is at the time. Slavers, raiders, and haters is who they are, of course however to do those things on a large scale is costly so instead of just wiping out the Ikeans they developed an idea.
Every year a handful of people (preferably young adults) are surrendered to the feudalists in exchange for them not to wipe out the Ikeans. (If you have ever seen 2015 mad Max you got the idea) So where do you come in? Well every year when a teenager reaches young adulthood (usually 17-21) they have a few choices ahead, if they are lucky they can be assigned to groups of four for various tasks depending on what the elders believe is best. Those who are not assigned to a group can either leave or be sent to the feudalists for the greater good.
So why are you here? Luckily for you, you have been chosen by the elders to be grouped into a team of scouts, explorers, scavengers, morons, whatever you want to call it. And you are about to perform your ritualistic proving to see if you have what it takes to provide to your people or you will die in the frozen hellscape that is your life. Will you survive? Will you endure whatever horrors and hardships face you? Will you benefit your community? Maybe. Will you die cold, frozen, and alone? Probably. So let our story begin...
