War of the Lions
Long before our story begins, the land of Othis was embroiled in a state of near constant war, with various kingdoms and principalities vying for control over each others land. Kingdoms rose and fell in a single human lifetime, and while the nobles played their game, it was the common folk who suffered. Famine and hunger spread across the land as the cycle of looting and pillaging left the land bear of resources, taken to fuel the professional soldiers of the time. Until the rise of the Kingdom of Leoncur.
Led by the charismatic King Aurion who believed it was a lords duty to protect his people, he was the one who laid the basis of the Knight's Code which dictated the chivalry all knights today still adher to. Dividing his land amoungst his knights, each built a powerful keep to protect their nearby subjects, who in turn provided food and conscripts when required. With this elite fighting force, Aurion managed to bring his neighbours into line and eventually into the kingdom's fold. By the time he passed away at the age of 66, he had left behind a kingdom too big to fail, and over time his descendants would continue his conquest until the continent of Othis was united under the lion's banner. In time an academy was founded where promising recruits, no matter how insignificant their bloodline, could recieve military and administrative training to join the esteemed rank of the Knights of the Lion. Named after the founder of the dynasty, the Aurion Academy has served the kingdom both as a school as well as a key trading post.
However the glory of Leoncur resides in the past. When King Regulus rose to power, his kind and loving nature towards his family would one day be his undoing. Grooming both of his sons to lead one day, as was traditional incase the eldest should suddenly die, he was unwilling to leave the entire kingdom to his eldest and leave the other to serve. When he finally passed on, he willed that both of his sons serve as co-monarchs and share the responsibility of kingship. Feeling cheated, the eldest son Maximillian attempted to have himself named sole monarch by having the army dipose his brother, however Valrius was always more cunning than his eldest brother. After securing the support of most of the knights and lords, Valrius instead attempted to have them assassinate his elder brother. After two failed attempts, Maximillian fled the capital leaving Valrius in charge. Rather than leave the kingdom firmly in Valrius' hands however, it split it into two and plunged the continent into war once more.
Taking control of the eastern provinces, Maximillian formed the cadat branch of Montarac and the Kingdom of Raine while Valrius continued the family name of Leofric and ruling from the traditional homelands of Leoncur. The two brothers tore each other apart, with both men dying at the Battle of Voltar, however their descendants continued the fight, hoping to unify the old Kingdom of Leoncur once again. However after almost 3 decades of war, no decisive winner stepped forth, and an uneasy ceasefire was established between the two kingdoms.
In the peace negotiations, borderlines were drawn out to definitively mark the boundaries between the two. Once that was established, a demilitarised zone was set up along the border, nearly 20 miles long, where no professional troops were to be stationed to leave it a peaceful trade zone. Along the north of the continent, where the resource dense region of Voltar resided, it was decided that neither would control the region. Forming its own independent principality with its own royal family, the region was to serve as a buffer between the two nations as well as neutral ground for all future talks to be held. A new era of peace spread across Othis, as each of the great powers looked elsewhere to expand their influence.
So the polticial sphere has remained stable for over three generations, with most minor border disputes and skirmishes settled in the Halls of Crystal in Voltar. In recent days however, Rainian miners discovered new magical gems. Known as the Spirit Stones, they contain small traces of magic that can be inserted into weapons to embue them with magical affinities. With this new weapon, Raine began to mobilise swiftly, using these new weapons to outfit their men. Along the demilitarised zone, armies have been moved into place on both sides. With the border heavily protected, both nations seek an advantage over the other. Naturally, eyes looked towards Voltar.
With no real army that could hope to resist either superpower, Voltar relies on their well trained militia to hold the towns and villages to buy the capital time should an invasion occur. While the knights of Raine assemble at the border in preparation for an attack, the diplomats of Leoncur have used various threats, promises and embargoes in an attempt to persuade Prince William to join their coalition.
In the small border town of Wiesel, life continues on. While the common folk might notice the local militia carrying out more patrols and roaming in full armour, the harvest is still collected and taken to the local markets and silos in preparation for the coming winter. It is here that a small group will be forced to set out on a journey that will define a nation, as they fight for their home, their family, and their friends.
(Your character will be one of a group of militiamen who will survive the attack on Wiesel, before being swept up in the upcoming War of the Lions. Whenever we have a group together (or if its changed to a onexone if there is only one C.S), I'll discuss with everyone which side they would prefer to take in the war and alter the story to suit. You can be any race or from any nation you like, as long as you write the lore for us all to read. If you want any additional lore, or information, feel free to ask.)
