Nearly their entire focus was on the staff still, even after Emryk began to speak. Yes, Juniper was aware it was a mistake, yes they knew she felt terrible for it. She had made that much clear, before screaming at them and storming off in a fit. "She has apologized, yes. I... haven't forgiven her, though. Not yet." They looked up to see Emryk, with his back turned to them, their whole body tingling with an energy they were certain the baron was not privy to, otherwise this conversation wouldn't be focused on what it was. They couldn't wait to have the time to figure out what exactly it was, but that would have to wait.
"Yes, it's true. She is very young. I've already tried to tell her to leave, and it... didn't work. No matter what I tell her, she doesn't listen." They hadn't noticed, but they were starting to focus on the talk a bit more now. What would have helped them back then? Guidance. Stability. Someone to point them away from the anger, fear, frustration. Someone to stop them before things went out of control again. But it was past that point, and they were here now. "Emryk, what would have helped me was someone telling me to leave. But she's insistent on staying, which is-"
Juniper stopped, and nearly froze in place, as the Al-Ashtavahk turned, facing them directly. That question had been- surely he couldn't know. Did he know? Did someone tell him, had they made a mistake, did they say something a moment ago, when they had been distracted by the staff? Had- had-
A shaken, nervous sigh escaped their lips, and their grip on the staff tightened. "I- I have... my life, before... I've only been on the ship for a year and a half, Baron. The time before that was... chaotic. Tumultuous. I've spent well over half my life blending in, so I suppose you could say that no, I don't. As a matter of fact, I left the manor just so I could not be me for a little while." Gods, this was terrifying. They were dancing around the truth in a way that, if they said the wrong thing, it could all be over.
But Baron Emryk Vakaan was trustworthy, right?
