Nick leaned up against the railing of the Hume, staring out across the ice fields that separated the main land to The Fleet. The cold night air seemed calm as it flowed gently along the top of the ship and swept across his face as he looked up towards the stars. "They look brighter tonight." He thought, "A good sign for things to come..."
Nick began to move along to the bow to get a clear view of the city he was to venture out into in the morning. Clouds seemed to linger around near the top of the ruined buildings, blocking the moonlight from entering the city but was hard to make out if they were going to stay there for tomorrow. He looked back towards the bridge and saw candlelight flickering in the window's reflection. Captain Yvonne and the lead engineer was likely still going over the list of items the expedition team was to try and recover.
Fiddling with his jacket collar, Nick began to stroll back alongside the railing towards the middle of the ship. As his fingers danced along the railing his mind began to wander once more, "Wonder if any of the other volunteers are awake. Surely can't be the only one." It had been a fortnight since his last trip out across the ice and Nick felt eager to head out once again. He didn't feel like he had the skills to help out around the ships, work the water pumps or any of the other machinery. Climbing around and searching through the frozen ruins was where he felt most comfortable, and most useful.
Coming up towards the middle of the ship, a flash of light shot out from the makeshift lighthouse atop the bridge of the Lockeport. "Looks fine to me." Only for the second rotation of the light to come back around slightly dimmer than the first. Then, dimmer once again. With a furrowed brow Nick watched the light stutter before shining back to full strength as it kept up its constant slow rotation. "Hm. Maybe a few more days at best then."
Turning his head around to look towards the bridge, he could make out the silhouettes of the captain and lead engineer still talking. Shaking heads, pointing at maps and folding of arms was all he could make out but it was clear to Nick that both were stressed about the journey to come. He took off his ushanka hat, the tattered fur lining seemed to be loose along one of the edges. With a sigh he ran his fingers through his shaggy brown hair before putting his hat back on. "Will need to cut this mop back before we head off tomorrow."
