"Rights for our workers! Fair wages for labor! BRING DOWN APEX!!!"
The chant echoed down the street, or at least a little way down the street before it was swallowed up by the usual noise of the city. The less-than-half finished Utilicon Building, currently the project of Apex Building Enterprises, was a metal skeleton barely fleshed out by hints of concrete. Even in this infant state it had already had a gift bestowed upon it - namely, a giant inflatable rat sitting in the gravel construction entry and surrounded by disgruntled union workers on strike.
Good for them, really. They were supposed to be able to fix things by bringing attention to the problem, but in this day and age there were just too many problems, and even a giant rat didn't attract enough attention. No, if people were going to pay attention to whatever shady dealings Apex Enterprises had with their workers, there was going to have to be a lot more happening than just another run of the mill strike.
And that suited Chromewrecker just fine. She'd gotten the tip off about the whole thing at her boring day job, listening in on people's conversations while checked out and letting instinct remember which person had the diet coke and all that useless mundane stuff. She hated useless mundane stuff. It was all so pointless, especially when compared to the dazzling heights she could have - should have - reached.
But here she was in Pittsburgh, and the only Apex there was the one bringing down the workers. She did feel a little bad about the whole "crossing a picket line" thing she was about to do, but hey, sometimes you had to break a few laws in the name of progress. And it was such a little law, anyway - especially compared with...
...Well, with the other thing she was here to do.
"'Scuse me, guys." She stepped between two of them, masked and dressed in silver, because that was going to be her thing, walking up to the building while someone called something after her about hard hat areas.
Nice guy, probably. Hopefully he stood back. She turned her head, gave him a wink, then touched her fingertip to one of the exposed struts. The metal skeleton crumbled, almost vanishing, bones turned instantly to dust, only little glimmering motes left to dance in the sunlight as the whole building suddenly came toppling down.
Now, there was a good way to make a statement.
