“Just… GO AWAY!”
The shrill exclamation rings through the air, which is suddenly still and quiet. Julieta wipes at her eyes with her palms and looks around, all of the anger leaving her at once.
“... Mama?” She calls, hesitant, taking a step forward and into the hallway where, just moments before, her parents had been standing. “Papa?”
No response, as the hallway is completely empty. Well, except for her angels. They never really leave. One of them nudges against her shoulder, the brush of wings against her arm lending a kind of silent reassurance. She reaches out to hold one of the glowing orbs, hugging it to her chest as she walks right up to where her parents were standing. And then right through the space. There isn’t any resistance. There isn’t anyone there.
The rest of the house is similarly empty.

Despite what her guidance counselor might think, Julieta isn’t dumb. When she searches the entire house and their yard and even pops into the corner store and still finds no sign of her parents, she has a sneaking suspicion of who’s to blame. Her angels have never done anything as big as this, but it’s the only thing that makes sense.
“Bring them back,” she demands, stomping her foot and pointing at the ground in front of her like she’s commanding a dog.
The nearest two angels swirl around her, their lights twinkling, and she gets the impression of confusion. “My parents. Mama and Papa. Bring them back here, right now!”
Still, nothing happens. Julieta throws herself back onto the couch, tugging at her hair as she tries to think of how else she might get her parents back. The angels press in around her, responding to her distress, but she doesn’t want to look at their glowing and their feathers and their swirling spirals right now.

Her Mama’s cell phone is still sitting on the kitchen counter. Julieta doesn’t have her own phone yet, even though half of her class does, but she’s pretty sure her mom won’t mind if she uses hers. It is kind of an emergency after all, and she’s supposed to call 911 when there’s an emergency.
Only… what if 911 thinks that she did something terrible? What if they come and take her away forever and put her in a quiet dark place where she can’t wish for anything else ever again? What if they can’t find her parents ever ever ever, and they lock her up in chains because it’s all her fault?
They wouldn’t be that wrong, she thinks miserably. One of her angels nudges at her arm, trying to get her to press the button and call the number like she knows she’s supposed to, but she just can’t do it. She locks the screen again and slips the phone into her pocket.
She’ll have to figure it out on her own.

A young girl pushes open the door to Kore’s office, struggling with the weight for a moment before it yields and pushes open easily. For a moment, a light from nowhere glints off of her, a sort of golden glow muted against her skin. It fades as she steps inside, and she makes a gesture as though shooing a buzzing fly.
“Leave me alone, I’m still mad at you,” she scolds quietly, seemingly addressing thin air. She smooths her palms over her skirt and walks up to the front desk with a stiff gait that has nothing to do with her prosthetic.
…
A moment passes where she just stares at the woman behind the desk, shuffling a little in place. Finally, Julieta shifts her shoulder a little and takes a breath. “Excuse me, I heard this is where you go for… uh…”
She seems to lose her nerve for a second, tangling her fingers in the hem of her skirt and crumpling the fabric. “Weird… stuff? Problems with…”
Her eyes dart to the side, tracing a loop in the air before she speaks again. “The paranormal?”
She really hopes she’s in the right place. It was all she could find on Google, and she knows she’s not supposed to trust everything on the internet but it would be really nice if this was real. And, if she’s learned anything, wishing for something can sometimes make it a little more likely to happen.
