Steampunk Scrapper Shifts Into Gear

While many tourists come here annually for the island's beautiful beaches and relaxed environment, few expected for their sightseeing to be tarnished by the sudden presence of an 18-foot-high brass contraption - yet that is exactly what happened there today. Dave Miles, 37, of Newark NJ was one of the first to report the strange occurrence to the media.
"One minute I was just standing there watching the boats go by, and the next there was a little shimmer. I didn't think anything of it - just looked like sunshine off the waves. Made me blink, though, and when I opened my eyes again there was this thing standing there. Looked like one of those science fiction things, only all old-timey somehow."
Mrs. Rebecca Miles, also 37, corroborates her husband's story. "I don't know how it got there - one moment nothing, the next a giant mechanical thing! Scared me right out of my wits, you know how these things go. It moved a little bit, but didn't go far. I didn't think it was hostile. Woman's intuition, you know."
At that time, whether or not Mrs. Miles' intuition would prove accurate was yet to be determined. Still, the newly arrived mechanical presence didn't seem in any hurry to go anywhere. One could almost envision it basking in the sun and waves just like any other tourist. Despite its initial passivity, civilians and tourists did not approach immediately, though this may have been more due to the need to swim out to the walker than any sense of self-preservation.
The machine was nonetheless close enough for people to get a decent look at it. It appeared to be largely made of brass, with various tubes interconnecting different parts. Those with particularly good zoom-in functions reported the visibility in places of what seemed to be small mechanical moving parts, as if the entire machine was constructed of gears and clockwork. Valves near the top of various parts of this construct occasionally let off bouts of steam.
It didn't take long for the Miles and others to start posting photos on social media of the strange walker in the water, and the media picked up the story moments later. The event was reported on several major media stations, both televised and via the radio, and online reporting was as quick as ever to pick up the story and begin distributing it to wider audiences.
Who was this stranger? Where did they come from? What did they want, and were they a danger? All these questions were waiting to be asked. Naturally, it didn't take all that long before the first superheroes started appearing on the scene to deal with this presence - and determine whether or not it was a threat.
