Asteria has few possessions, given her constant travels. She has several sets of light colored clothing, a dark cloak, and two pairs of shoes. Upon arriving in new places, she tends to barter for a temporary residency, offering her magic and various skills as a translator and musician as services in exchange. She carries few other items of value, with two exceptions. In a soft leather case embroidered with silver flowers resides an old violin, dating back to when she first left the island. She also possesses a mirror, set in wood with a detailed carving of a falling star on the back. It is roughly eight inches in diameter.

For a time, she tried to find things to do to avoid looking at the sky- she would travel to new villages by day, earning board at night by helping with daily tasks and performing medicinal magic. She would spend her hours at night learning new skills, new languages, new spells- she even learned to play the violin. And sometimes, she looked up and became lost again, watching others live.
[break][break]
It was on one of these nights, just shy of her twentieth birthday, eight years after the death of her people, that she found a star that caught her eye. It shined upon a young man from a region she didn’t recognize, and she was utterly entranced by him, by his kindness and compassion, by his golden and fierce looks. For days after that, she spent her nights and much of her day watching him. After a few weeks, Asteria had no choice but to admit it to herself- she was in love.
[break][break]
She began to research his region, trying to find his location. It took almost an entire solar month to find him, but she finally found a village in the south that resembled his location and used the language she had begun to learn from the visions. It was hardly a decision at all to pack her little belongings and buy passage to the other continent. The voyage would take almost another full month, and to distract from the long and tedious trip, she spent much of her time watching him.
[break][break]
By now, she knew his name, which was Brone, and she knew that he came from a small family and was three years older than her. He lived in Greycott, a village where her magic would be welcome, as they didn’t have a healer, and he was a shepherd. He was kind to everyone, and he enjoyed music and reading whatever books he could get his hands on. His family wanted him to travel to the next closest city to try and find a wife, as there weren’t many in the village even remotely close to his age, but he staunchly refused on the basis that he had too much work to do to leave. Asteria knew the truth, though. He believed the right person for him would come when they were ready.
[break][break]
Three days before they were set to dock, Asteria woke from her increasingly short slumber to find that Brone’s star was missing. No matter how much she searched for it, she couldn’t find it again. It didn’t matter to her, however. She was so close that she would see him in person soon. So she turned her gaze back to the world around her and practiced her violin playing.
[break][break]
When they arrived at port, she immediately set off down the road toward Graycott, and after half a day, she reached it. She could tell immediately that something was wrong. The normally colorful and joyful people that she was used to seeing through the star were wearing mourning[ clothes. Her heart sank like a rock as she put it together in her head. She slowly made her way through the village, walking down the path that she had been so excited to take, until she arrived at his family’s home. Sure enough, the house was closed up, black curtains in the window confirming what she already knew- she was too late.
[break][break]
Asteria turned around and walked until her feet began to bleed.
[break][break]
From that point on, it was easier than ever to get lost in the sky. She learned to function while always looking at the sky, trying to avoid processing her grief over someone she never even got to meet. It was easier to lose herself in others’ lives than pay any real attention to her own.
[break][break]
Years passed.
[break][break]
Then decades.
[break][break]
A century.
[break][break]
Until she forgot all about the beautiful boy with the sun kissed skin.
[break][break]
Two centuries.
[break][break]
Until she forgot about the girl with the jet black hair who ran barefoot through the snow in the north.
[break][break]
Three centuries.
[break][break]
Until she finally found herself in a city that sat atop a rocky shore. A city with bright, bright stars.

There was a time in her life when Asteria could remember things. There was a time when she was young and carefree, when she ran barefoot through the snowy hills outside her village. There was a time when she had hair as black as the night sky, the same color that her mother and father had, the same color her brother had. There was a time she knew love.
[break][break]
But now all Asteria knew was stars.
[break][break]
The stars told her things- things about where people were and what they were doing, about what was happening in far off places, about where she should go. At first, she just looked for people who might need help or guidance. After a while, she began to get lost, losing time to the sky as she began to watch more and more people. Soon, she was losing entire nights, laying by the water when the stars were the clearest and watching people. She began to panic one morning upon rising and realizing she couldn’t remember what day it was, or when she had last eaten. There was a time in her life when Asteria could remember things. [attr="class",AlchemyContentBodySymbol]✵
[attr="class",AlchemyContentBodyFontSize]It was early evening in the fall as Asteria finished her duties for the day in the village of Wolford. The young boy who had been brought to her had had a broken leg– a fall from the bell apple tree outside their family’s home, according to his mother. Repairing his bone- fractured in three separate places with a slight splinter- had been easy, but time consuming. You could only heal a body that wasn’t yours so fast, after all. To pass the time while she worked, she turned through the stars until she found his.
[break][break]
Flashes of the past began to play out for her. Oswyn had a younger sister, and his parents were farmers. He and his sister frequently played in the fields of grain and went fishing in the creek at the edge of the forest. Something about the memories of him and his sister grabbed Asteria’s interest, and she pulled more of them forward.
[break][break]
Both he and his sister had black hair and gray eyes, just like their mother. Something about that stung her, and a deep and forgotten emotion pierced her heart. She watched them play, watched them try to help their parents with their work, watched them run through fields as the sun was setting behind them. Oswyn would always check behind him to make sure that she was still there, to make sure she hadn’t fallen down.
[break][break]
Asteria withdrew from the visions, swallowing hard against the rising flood in her chest.
[break][break]
“Is he going to be okay, miss?” His mother stood in the doorway of the small cabin that Asteria was temporarily working out of. Something about her face, with its soft features and wide eyes, added to the pain.
[break][break]
She wiped her eyes and smiled gently. “Yes, yes, he’ll be fine. He should stay out of the trees for the next week- his leg needs time to settle, or he could injure it again.”
[break][break]
Oswyn’s mother smiled and gestured for her son to come out. The boy happily skipped outside and over to his sister, who sat at the edge of the path. He joined her in examining the medicinal flowers that grew along the stone. Asteria’s vision began to blur and double up. She gave a soft goodbye to the family and closed the door.
[break][break]
Almost immediately, her body began to shake and she broke down, sliding down the door and crying as quietly as she could manage. Shaking hands pushed the cloud of white from her face, the pale hair that had gradually erased her past. She had no idea why it bothered her, why it made her so sad and filled her with a deep ache that she couldn’t identify. Instead, she looked to the sky outside the window and picked a star at random, burying herself within the life it shared with her.
[break][break]
If only she could find her own star- maybe she’d know what these feelings of despair and loneliness were. Maybe she’d be able to move forward in life again, and make some kind of connection with the people around her. Maybe she’d find a place she belonged.
[break][break]
As quickly as the flood had overtaken her, Asteria lost herself in the sky.

[attr="class",AlchemyContentBodyFontSize]When Asteria woke, everything was gone. Ash was everywhere- where the town hall used to stand, where the school house had been, where her best friends’ house had stood, where her own home had resided- all ash. Ash as far as the eye could see. She looked down. Her hands, her feet, her dress- ash.
[break][break]
There weren't even any bodies.
[break][break]
The entire island had been consumed in the blaze.
[break][break]
Everyone was gone.
[break][break]
Everyone- but Asteria.
[break][break]
It started softly. A vibration that seemed to come from deep within her began to shake her small frame. It traveled from her chest down to her legs, and then it found its way down to her fingers until she found herself kneeling in the gray. The shaking loosened everything inside of her- the chaos that was slowly bubbling, fizzing, boiling beneath the surface. Then it overflowed, and it escaped her as a scream that tore her throat and caused tears to stream down her dirty face. There was nothing that could stop it then- nothing could stop the raging storm that burst forward, that began to twist the very air around her.
[break][break]
It ended devastatingly. The ground around her cracked as she slammed her tiny hands into it over and over, and the sky spun and twisted into circling clouds as her throat began to bleed from her screams.
[break][break]
Asteria had never known grief before, and she had rarely had cause to know anger or sadness. Asteria had also never had so much power before- the sacrifice of those before her, the sacrifice that has saved her and her alone, had blessed her with the combined power of all of her people.
[break][break]
She would give anything to give it all back.
[break][break]
It was hours before she moved again, rising from the now broken ground. Night had long since fallen. Without the light of the sun, the ground appeared even darker to her eyes. She couldn’t bear to look at it any longer. Asteria turned her pale blue eyes to the school, praying for guidance from the stars.
[break][break]
The light hit her immediately, blinding her. Her hands rose to cover her eyes as she gasped. Was the night sky always so bright? Had it always looked like… that? Peeking between her fingers, she looked back into the stars, now bright and so close that she could touch them. They hung like snowflakes in the sky, each one unique and glittering as they bounced the light back and forth between themselves.
[break][break]
Carefully, she reached a hand out and tapped the closest one with her finger. It was cold, glassy, like the crystals she and her brother had found in the cave summers ago. The star spun slowly around to reveal a flat surface. And on that flat surface, she saw a girl with bright red hair playing in a creek, her parents behind her. The image twisted and changed, showing the same girl running through trees, sitting in a school room, eating dinner with her family, and soon the images were moving so fast that Asteria became dizzy.
[break][break]
“Stop, stop, stop.” She pushed the star away, and to her surprise, it drifted away into the sky, floating out into the clouds. Awe covered her face as she slowly examined all of the different stars, each one so unique and sparkling. A long time ago,she had asked her mother why all of the grown ups kept talking to the sky.
[break][break]
“It’s because the stars tell us things, my love. The people of Thesperae are blessed. You, especially. You’re a Thesperaen too, but you’re also your father’s daughter. You will be able to see so much more in the stars when you’re grown. Just wait, you’ll see.” Mother had looked at her with such love when she said that.

[attr="class",AlchemyContentBodyGridPadding]
[attr="class",AlchemyContentBodyFontSize]
A child of Thesperae, of the stars, a child of Bailenagréine, of the light. Born a daughter of a foreign Elvish caster and a léčitel, Asteria and her brother were anticipated to have much stronger magic than the rest of the island. During the event that burned their island down, many chose to sacrifice themselves in an attempt to save the few children of the town. In the end, they discovered that the amount between them wasn’t enough to save all of them- but it was enough to save one.
[break][break]
Asteria inherited the collective magic of the town, including that of her father and brother. The intended effect was achieved- Asteria was untouched by the fire and left unscathed. The well of magic that resided in her after was enough to cause her people’s native magic to exponentially increase beyond anything they could have imagined.
[break][break]
At any time, day or night, Asteria can see the stars in the sky. They function like individual windows, each one connected to an individual person and containing a record of their lives up to that point. The closer a person is to her in physical proximity, the more likely their star will appear as she sorts through them. Unless she has seen a star (or the person) before, it can be difficult for her to find a particular star when asked, and take as long as weeks to find them based on where they are in the world.
[break][break]
Many stars are obscured- the magic is a form of psionic scrying and can be prevented easily enough by shielding your mind or becoming undetectable. Stars also disappear once a person has died- she theorizises this is because each one is connected to the soul, and if the soul leaves the plane, so does the star. However, the undead do have stars- they are fractured, as though they have been pieced back together, and they tend to be much more sickly in their light. She prefers not to interact with them.

It is her most effective way of helping people injured during battle.

She can only hold it for roughly one minute, and it does very minimal damage.

A shimmering shield of light deflects attacks, both magical and physical, but only once per cast. It takes a heavy amount of concentration and energy, and as such, her maximum amount of consecutive casts is five.
