Van Loon Park was inhabited by Metoac Native Americans before being 'discovered' and settled by early Dutch colonists, who were displaced by German and other European settlers in turn. Then an affordable residential area near the factories of a 19th-century industrializing Millennium City, Van Loon Park passed through successive communities of Anglo, Irish, Italian, Jewish, and Hispanic immigrants before the introduction of Chinese immigrants in the 1890s. Initially brought over from the west coast by industrialist magnates to break up strikes, the workers settled into the area and opened up restaurants, laundries, and grocers.
After the passing of the Page Act in 1875, which banned the immigration of Chinese women, and the following Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the Chinese enclave remained a small community mostly consisting of men. It wasn't until the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 that immigration exploded. Cantonese-speaking families settled into the area during the '60s before being superseded by the arrival of Mandarin-speaking Chinese in the '70s and onwards. Over the next fifty years, immigrants from all over Asia would settle in and about the neighborhood, bringing their food, traditions, arts and culture with them.
Chinese, Indian, Korean, Vietnamese, Pakistani, Filipino, Japanese, Malay, and Sikh make up most of the 71% Asian population; followed by Hispanic or Latino, White, Black, and Native American.

“Winter melon milk tea. Straws over there” the employee called out, sliding a drink onto the counter and gesturing at the jar full of straws atop the counter. [break][break] “Thanks!” Keziah responded brightly; taking the drink in one hand and turning around to slip her other into her small shoulder bag. She waited a beat until a cold metal tube appeared within her palm. Pulling it out, she had to make several attempts at puncturing the plastic seal before leaving the store. [break][break] Walking along the street, Keziah sipped her drink but couldn’t help to note that there was no biting down or any flex to a metal straw like there was on a plastic one. The sacrifices we make, she thought. [break][break] Above head, Millennium blared commercial messages that slid across digital billboards mounted on buildings. Outside of the regular rumble of faraway chatter and traffic, Keziah’s mind also faintly registered all the digital activity that went on in her general vicinity. Even texts sent from inside the stores. She passively took in digital signals and information like a how a metal sheet absorbs incoming sound. [break][break] They rippled across the periphery of her minds eye but Keziah tuned it out as extraneous information by occupying herself to stay in the here and now. Wouldn’t want to trip over a curb now would we? [break][break] Further down the street was a teenager filming someone. A rather valiant figure in a striking shade of red stood atop a Millennium City Post vending machine. Foot traffic skirted around her with people throwing her a glance of wariness. She didn’t seem like a villain but her outfit was decked in cross insignias. In this city, costumes bearing logos only forebode a villain or a hero out to make a name. In her minds eye, Keziah accessed the kid’s Samsung camera to take a closer look. Pretty new face, she thought, absentmindedly sucking more milk tea to finish off her drink. Could this be a debut?[break][break]
