Aloisë perhaps more so than anybody embodies the spirit of the Morahak people. A restless puzzle with jagged tabs; always one bad day away from reverting to barbarism. Typical of his people, Aloisë values fidelity and liberty above all other things, beyond wealth, beyond power, beyond reason. Woe unto any who would break his slow earned trust for they will not be long for this world.
[break][break]
Veteran of the Fiend War with the Turgrim Empire, Aloisë crossed the border north in search of a man who had wronged his company years ago. Subsiding on coin earned or taken in the meanwhile, slowly selling the man that he once was, he has learned that his quarry lived lavishly in the Seven-score Thousand Spires. Sleeping soundly, unawares of the ire lurking in the Heartlands.

In Morahen, only nobles have proper last names. Sometimes commoners will have last names that stem from noble lines, foreign origins, land ownership or some such. Otherwise, most Morahan commoners introduce themselves with a reference to the area they come from or to their trade. Aloisë was the son of one of the 'Cutpurse Lords', criminals who had managed to reach status during the fall of Greater Morahen through cheating, killing, and taking.
[break][break]
It was the dead of winter when Torgrim forces assaulted their homestead and killed his parents. So had the boy's family name been burned as fuel for the looming war.
[break][break]
Barely 14 years of age, Aloisë had already been fighting against the invading force as a partisan. Lesser Morahen had been kingless since the fall, making any large-scale counter-offensive impossible. The Torgrim, on the other hand, were at the height of their magocratic empire. Though they warred on the surface they already controlled much of the Underdark, allowing them to deploy their forces deep within enemy territory. Thus it came as no suprise that the Morahak had lost leagues of ground quickly. The ground quaked and broke and gave way to first of the fiends that pillaged the countryside for months on end.
[break][break]
The first blight was broken by an unlikely fellowship with the Firbolg and Dwarf peoples. Men chose to aid with a great sacrifice. An accord was struck and the Order of The Briar was found in this crisis. Fathers and sons, peasants and farmers. Any who could lift a blade. They gave themselves to the giant-kin druids to be remade for the cause. Lives were lost in droves that approached the war against the demons, but the few that lived emerged better. Armed with the finest dwarwen armor and rune-blades, the first of the Bordermen.
[break][break]
Though the blacktide was halted, it took years before any significant progress was made. It took conscripting Men with savvy, innate cruelty and skills into the Bordermen Corps. Men like Aloisë. These new conscripts were from a much sturdier lot. Slowly, the war turned back in Morahen's favor and parts of the border have been reclaimed.
[break][break]
He served with the 13th Forward Regiment, "The Whoresons". Earning himself the name Widoghast in the process after staging numerous ambushes across the Dogwood. The unit was known of their efficiency and ruthlessness, and consisted of dauntless tattooed swashbucklers, interrogation specialists, noiseless scouts – all of them extremely loyal to their leader: Hoachím Norvak.
[break][break]
They often operated independently and were utilised for particularly dangerous undertakings. It was during one such mission where they were dispatched to secure imporant resources from beyond the Underdark front. Although their endeavor was successful the mission was ultimately a failure as their commander suddenly turned coat with a handful of traitors and left the rest to die underground.
[break][break]
Most of the unit was lost in the resulting slaughter. Unfortunately, Aloisë managed to make it out back to the surface, almost losing his dominant arm in the process. The few remaining men of the 13th either scattered to the winds or returned to the now compromised war effort. He himself took a leave after recuperating to stalk Hoachím's bastards across the Heartlands.

It is said that the Bordermen are called that for two reasons. One being that they hold the borders of Morahen agains the profane threat, but the other is that the Men of the Briar teeter on the edge of inhumanity. They are known to be exceptionally, almost unnaturally, swift and hard to kill. They see in dark as if it were twilight and some can be prone to mysterious growth spurts even late into their lives. The Bordermen are mercurial in many ways and those outside the Order and the Militia understand very little of their practices.
[break][break]
The unsung truth that saved Morahen once is that it's Men had sacrificed a great deal to beat the everlasting enemy by becoming more like it with each kill. Indeed, the Bordermen were taken apart by druidic workings that would make some necromancers shudder and reknit to abide by a certain sword-logic. Only the Order of the Briar is privy to the details of this strange phenomenon. It is known that these changes, known as The Hunger amidst the Militia, are not immediate. It takes up to several months to raise a full-fledged Borderman from a succesful conscript.
[break][break]
While easily their greatest strength it is also their greatest flaw. The Hunger can be... unpredictable and so can be the effects of The Taking. Vestigial pseudo-limbs, horns and other deformities can set in quickly if the Borderman overindulges. Some of those unfortunate to have succumbed to the Hunger join The Clergy of the Rose. A sect of hooded mongrelmen acting as guides for their brothers through the Taking, to prevent their curse from spreading.
Known also as The Secret Fire or Flamma Reconditus, is a kind of magical flame passed down between dwarves. It burns with a greenish plume that is known to reveal the hidden things in the world and is kept burning in massive forges wrought out of adamantine and djezet. This rare kindling is what allows master dwarves to fashion runes that can ensorcell their wares with unearthly properties. Wýrdfire can also be used to activate certain dormant spells and, most importantly, as an advanced form of writing. Messages written using Wýrdfire can transmit tangible sensations and complex ideas and feelings to the reader.
[break][break]
The Firbolg druids harnessed this runic flame for the remaking of the Bordermen and thus the Wýrdfire burns within all of them. It is what makes the Taking possible. Most learn to weaponize this fire by temporarily setting their arms ablaze. The resulting weapon becomes magical even if it is not innately. Though it seems to burn, there is no heat to the flame. Damage done by the fire is a mixture of cold and radiant.
[break][break]
By drawing runes with the secret script, Aloisë can also effect lesser druidcraft and thaumaturgy at great expense.

Aloisë comes from a line of foragers and huntsmen who have watched over the Greenwood for ages. As such he has mastered the tools of the ranger to their fullest degree, though his scope had been somewhat changed after his consription into the Bordermen's Militia. His chosen foe had become the fiend and the undead. On land or in the underdark, it matters not.
[break][break]
Though Common is his native language Aloisë also picked up Dwarvish and Giant from members of the Order while the cries of his enemies served as ample instructional for him to learn the intricacies of Undercommon and Abyssal.

Though Common is his native language Aloisë also picked up Dwarvish and Giant from members of the Order while the cries of his enemies served as ample instructional for him to learn the intricacies of Undercommon and Abyssal.

A deadly longsword forged by the Mithril Dwarves for the Archdruid Seóirse at the founding of the Order of the Briar. The first half of the sword, from the pommel up, has an undulating pattern perfectly mirrored on both sides meant to symbolise vines and the covenant with the Firbolg people. Though the blade becomes almost geometrically straight in the upper half, strikes parried low cause unpleasant vibrations to the opponent. Dwarven runes run along the fuller, rendering the weapon magical.
Aloisë rides atop an almost 8 foot tall bovine native to the underdark, known as a Deep Rothé. It's stature is more muscular and imposing than the cattle found on the surface of the Known World. Long thick horns curl down the side of its head and a long shaggy coat covers its body. It is a hardy breed, capable of casting dancing lights to communicate with each other.
Piecemeal dwarven armor (functionally a breastplate). A longbow and quiver containing 30 arrows. A handaxe. A hunting knife and a hand-crossbow, holstered together on his belt. A shield. Red shirt, brown leather suspenders, brown leather Cavalry boots and riding breeches.
[break][break]
Explorer's Pack: Includes a backpack, a bedroll, a mess kit, a tinderbox, 10 torches, 10 days of rations, and a waterskin. The pack also has 50 feet of hempen rope strapped to the side of it.
An electrum whistle whose sound only Fiends can hear.
[break][break]
A shrunken gremishka head that twitches when anyone casts magic nearby.

It is rumored that Gerhard was quite handsome before the Hunger took him. One could not surmise that from his current dispostion. He stands, noticeably hunched, at little over 5 feet, every part of his body meticulously obscured in robes of black and red. He leans on a great spear and a censer with spots of dry blood from the various rites hangs from his waist. Gerhard is one of the members of the Clergy of Rose, a sect of deformed Bordermen too far gone. They are largely shunned by society for their patchwork appearance.
[break][break]
Despite his pitiful lot in life, Gerhard more than anyone is accepting of other races, treating all as equals and never discriminating on account of heritage. He values survival, and would gladly suffer through humiliation and abasement to continue living to find a way to cure himself. A patient man, he possesses a strong sense of community as a result of their outcast status and thus values Aloisë greatly as a friend and ally.
[break][break]
Because of his condition, Gergard has taken on the role of an attendant for Aloisë during their quest. He often remains behind to take care of the camp while his friend is out looking for work. These chores include taking care of equipment, food, lodgings or preparing Clergy rites for Aloisë. Indeed, this thaumaturgy can curb the effects of a wrongful Taking or impart specific traits unto a Borderman, useful for one who is not too far gone. The Clergy's workings also include the creation of various fetishes and talismans from slain creatures.
