The story of two souls starting life anew begins within a humble little café-and-diner, owned by a small but happy family. The Mutz Magnifique, a partnership business between Darius Hoxwell, and his wife, Claire Hoxwell. There they make a modest living, along with their daughter Elise, and their recent housing of one of the two odd souls, Theodore, who took on their last name as for his new life. We follow a particularly rainy afternoon where both customers old and new take shelter from the drizzle, often welcomed with such a warm atmosphere.
A spouse of an old regular, Kate had introduced her coworker and dear friend Alex to the establishment, the other soul in the par, to her reluctance. There, the two reunited, though greeted each other as new strangers. As the day went on, the catalyst linking each other had arrived in the form of Harris, a consultant from the hospital both had woken from. Harris had arrived, filling out a survey for Theodore, which had almost been a tradition for the past two years that he had lived with the Hoxwells. As both Harris and Theodore had begun to discuss their respective days afterwards, unbeknownst to them Alex had been eavesdropping, listening in on their chat.
Boldly, she joined the two as they conversed, though her actions seemed normal; to ask for a cup of water was natural.
...
"So, how has work been?" Theo asked, taking a sip from his cup, while Harris had replied with a tired chuckle, replying in a similar manner.
"Well, work is work. You don't love it nor hate it. Been doin' errands for thirty years and at that point you wonder about retirement. Then you get to that year and all the sudden you tell yourself 'just one more year', And it goes on, and on. Anyway, how are you?" Harris shit back the question, taking time to Rip open a pack of sweetener into his drink.
"Been feeling content with everything, really. I got my first vacay week, visited new places, seen new things, met new people." Theodore exclaimed in a bashful and quiet manner, feelings as if a vacation nowadays was a luxury not many could afford. Harris laughed it off, complimenting his polite attitude, ensuring him vacations were normal. Their conversation would have continued forth, but an unexpected presence had interrupted them.
To his right, Alex, Kate's friend had leaned forth, hollering politely for the barista on shift, asking for a glass of water. Her exterior expression hadn't spiked any suspicion, yet Theodore had a gut feeling she wasn't of close proximity with them just to grab some water.
"Well, now. Ain't this just a small world!" Harris spoke, from behind him, a subtle astonishment painted on his face. Theodore was puzzled, though perhaps it may be by mere coincidence they know of each other.
"Theo, do you happen to know of Miss Carver?"
"Not since today, no... Do you two know each other?" Theo asked, equally as confused as he was curious.
"She too, like yourself is also a patient who also gets reviewed with these surveys. She also came around the same time, almost as bad as your condition when you were first administered in the hospital!" Harris answered, while Theodore had switched attention, back and forth occasionally from the two surrounding him.
Alex have off some subtle physical hints of irritation just from Harris's presence. She wasn't too fond of him, from what he could guess.
"She's been avoiding me for quite some time now, though it's expected. I don't blame her. Not a lotta folks got time to take a repeating survey every half year. I'd do the same if I was in both your positions."
Harris paused for a moment, leaning in on the table so that he could be seen by her, offering a friendly smile.
"Afternoon Miss Carver!"
