Jin joined his wife beside the young girl just as she was admitting she had no money. The toddler on his shoulders looked down at Sam-se with curious eyes, and raised a hand to offer a clumsy wave. The streets of San Se held more unfamiliar faces than Jia had seen in her young life, and she had spent most of the morning waving at anyone and everyone. He shook his head, smiling. "That's never stopped Kira from feeding someone before," he explained. "You're welcome to join us, her treat."
But before the girl could give her answer, a low boom in the distance rattled the dirt beneath their feet. There was an immediate shift in Jin's expression - the relaxed smile disappeared, his eyes sharpened, and his posture stiffened. Kira looked around, standing on the tips of her toes to try to spot the direction the sound had came from. "Are they starting the fireworks already?" she asked in confusion. "It's the middle of the day...".
"Those weren't fireworks." Jin reached up, lifting his daughter swiftly from her perch atop his shoulders and carrying her in his arms instead. Jia laughed as she was lifted down, as if it were a silly game, but there was no hint of joy on her father's face. It had been years since he'd heard the sounds of Fire Navy munitions, but he knew the sound that their cannons made when they fired. If they acted now, they could move a few seconds faster than most others in the city. "We have to get ready to leave. Now."
Sure enough, the distant boom was followed secondss later by the sound of the city's warning bells echoing through the streets. Jin looked back at the young girl that they had been offering a hot meal to just seconds earlier. Food would have to wait, but they could still help ensure her safety. "Do you have any family around?" he asked her, though the fact that she'd been picking scraps off the street made him almost certain that the answer was no.
