Millennium University was a shining beacon for young metahumans, superheroes or superheroes-in-training, with a curriculum designed to teach them not only the basics that any college would supply, but also give the students a firmer grasp on their powers and abilities and whatever else they might need to use them going forth. Many of the instructors were retired professional heroes, and the University hosted regular guest lectures from heroes in the field to talk about current events. It was not likely that they had hosted many lectures from active supervillains, but Gawain of Mont Saint-Michel had proven that he was not precisely a standard supervillain. He had made no pretenses whatsoever about his identity, and indeed it was plastered on the flyers tacked up at various points around the school, as well as having been sent to students and staff via email. Lecture Series: Current Events On The Nature Of Practical Tyranny Gawain of Mont Saint-Michel Tuesday, 7pm, Main Lecture Hall The initial inquiries, of course, had largely been along the lines of whether or not he was serious, but once that had passed off, the inquiries had become a matter of whether or not he was safe. After all, it was not that long since Gawain had premeditated and performed an attack on a government facility in Washington, DC. His openness, however, proved his best defense in the matter. He had been known to host others - heroes, even - at Mont Saint-Michel and elsewhere, with no harm to their safety. His word had been given that so long as no one else started anything, he was merely there to educate. The nature of the lecture itself was another matter of discussion. Gawain fully embraced the fact that some of these bright young minds might be the supervillains of tomorrow, and made no pretenses about the fact that this was what he was interested in. The University staff might not have been so eager to embrace that fact, but they also could not deny that he was not necessarily wrong. That, and that by exposing the young heroes to such an event, it might give them some insight about the supervillains they may one day be facing, in as safe and controlled an environment as the University could allow for. Eventually, it had been determined that the lecture would go ahead. Not without cautions, of course, but it was, as they were forced to admit, a distinctly unique opportunity. When the appointed day and time arrived, the lecture hall was quite heavily populated. Some of them would be thinking about how to stop him, others about whether or not he had a point. Others still would be anxiously planning an attack. Many of the faces were new, some were familiar. It all seemed very tense, as everyone there was waiting to see what would come of all of this. Gawain himself did not know which route it would all take, and that was merely part of the entertainment of the whole thing. And so he stood before the podium and greeted the many faces, coolly but not condescendingly, and spoke to them about what it took to become a supervillain, and about what it took to stay one - about reach and overreach and about the need to know how much of one's tyranny and oppression a given people would put up with. About how human nature would put up with a great many things, because it was easier than leaving one's comfort zone. All of these things were things he had said before, to those privileged few to whom he had granted audience, but he didn't hesitate to bring them up here, in front of so many young minds. They were the future, and it was a future that Gawain would be a part of - so it intrigued him to shape it somewhat, not through deception, but through honesty, the sharp weapon of the truth that no one spoke of. He spoke, too, of what it meant to be a superhero and to stop someone like him. Less about values and more about costs, about those of them who were sitting there right now wondering how many of their fellows they should be willing to sacrifice in order to get someone like Gawain off of the roster. Naturally, he made no attempt at all to shy away from the nature of the current situation, and indeed admitted to setting it all up that way largely so that he could see what they would do. His amusement at the fact was quite evident as well, also not condescending, merely hearty. He had changed nothing, after all - merely pointed all these things out, quite directly, and watched those present to see what it was they would make of it all. "And now we reach the end of my preparations, and I think some of you have questions, and some of you would like to kill me where I stand. So... which shall it be?" |
OC Spaces for this RP are limited to: - All active Millennium University students (characters attending there who have had posts in the last 6 months) - no limit - General open spaces (anyone at all) - 5 available, reservations will be held for a maximum of 12 hours. All non-student spaces filled (3 taken, two reserved) - There is going to be some pretty quick-fire Q&A stuff. When asking questions, please restrict your post to one topic. Additional inquiries can be made in later posts; shorter posts are just fine. - I'll be responding IC when I can, even if there hasn't been a full round. If you've done three back and forth in a row, let someone else go or wait 48 hours before going again. - The lecture hall is populated with students. Attacking or initiating combat will result in student death. It is up to you whether or not this is something your character wants to do. If you're choosing to attack, I'd ask that you check in with other participants first and make sure they're okay with the timing. |
