Mettle took the small manila envelope from the misty hound, turning it over in his hand for a moment before sliding it into a pocket sewn into his suit's inner lining.
He smiled gently.
"Come on. There is no local law enforcement anymore. There's MIRA, sure. MIRA is a shock team good for killing giant monsters...and that's it. I can count the number of good heroes left on one hand. Did you hear that Gawain is presenting a talk in Millennium City, and nobody knows what to do? The rule of law is dead. It's just little kingdoms now, like yours and mine."
On the surface, not a bad deal. Protection and access to additional warehousing in addition for doing nothing. Protection from local law enforcement was meaningless, but Legion could swat a few gnats here and there - would-be vigilantes, in the vein of the Spinebreaker or such. And he would be hardly morally culpable for doing nothing in this kind of situation. The Bronx was his territory's limit. The only cost would be in what this could mean for his future.
For now, he didn't accept or decline. He decided to press.
"As for my question... you know that's not what I meant. I meant why expand at all," he said, looking back at the other young man quizzically.
"Remember what we discussed last time - is this something you have to do? Or is it a choice, Legion? Are you in control of yourself?"
His brow furrowed more deeply. Though his chrome eyes were smooth - featureless - there was an unmistakable flash of human concern behind them.
"Are you here for help?"
He smiled gently.
