My gaze shifted between Onigirl and the strange winter person I had pinned down. The two exchanged words as they argued back and forth. As I paid careful attention, running what was being said from both parties against the little evidence Onigirl and I did have of everything that had transpired so far.
I perked up slightly when the two began talking about the misconception that Onigirl and I were a thing.
I grinned, a full-smirk under the mask formed. The snark within in me was too strong right now to be denied its rightful glory.
In layman's terms, I couldn't help myself with what happened next.
Mock hurt permeated my voice, "Aw man. I'm hurt. And after all the effort I put into our relationship? I feel like I'm the only one who's trying to make this work."
If I could put a hand over my chest to accentuate my playful point, I would have, if not for the fact I needed to pin down the sniper to the ground to keep them from escaping.
"We'd be totally cute in photos together though. You got to think about that."
I would laugh if I could. Absolutely have howled my head off if I didn't have to keep a straight face and resume this interrogation. It didn't help that Onigirl was talking about being careful and all that right before stomping their foot on top of our prisoner's arm, keeping them pinned.
That's how you do it, Onigirl.
Still, the sniper's attention settled towards me.
The gunman or woman or whoever or whatever this person was swore on the title of "lord" as their excuse to be trusted, to even be trusted to answer our questions. I don't know who or what they were lord of, but that was not enough to give them any sort of pass. What kind of lord needed to lurk around Duskburg rooftops and have guns strapped to their backs in the middle of the district with the highest crime rates in the United States?
This was going nowhere and the fact this snow person seemed to get antsier by the minutes as Onigirl and I kept them pinned did not help matters. A full-on fight between all of us would result in a lot of damages and possible casualties if none of us were careful.
I had to nip this in the bud, compromise for a minute and work something out. I had to find a way to appease all parties, at least for a little while.
I guess I actually had to play good cop.
"Okay, everyone. Let's calm down for a minute."
I gestured with my head towards the owl person, signaling I was speaking to them specifically.
"Listen, we can't exactly trust the fact you're a lord or anything else for that matter. We have nothing but your word to go on. See what I mean?"
I gave a brief yet noticeable glance at the weapons and gear the prisoner had equipped onto their person.
"You got all these weapons, act shady, and claim to cause the snowstorm to- what? Play matchmaker? That only proves you were spying on the building in the first place."
I paused for a second, letting that sink in, before resuming.
"Here's the deal. We will not treat you as a prisoner any further as long as you give us good, substantial reason not to treat you like that. Right now, we have half a mind to turn you over to MIRA because I think I'm correct in assuming some of the weapons you have aren't exactly kosher by legal standards."
I laid down on how everything would proceed from here on out.
"Answer the questions. Give us a good reason to let you go, and, trust me, it needs to be good considering everything, especially for Onigirl because you got her real riled up from what I can tell. Do that and we let you go and we forget this whole dust up. Honest. We'll leave you alone after this. Here, I'll even prove it."
I turned my head towards Onigirl.
"Onigirl, would you be a dear and stop stepping on, er, what's your name again? Lord Snowball the Third?"
I honestly had no clue. In all the chaos, I had never bothered to ask. Villains and heroes usually loved to give their names. Not so much mercenaries but it still happens.
Either way, let's see what happens next.
