"Basilica," she replied through gritted teeth. Though the split-second later echo in the orb of glass wouldn't carry her expression, it certainly carried her tone of deadpan annoyance. He was getting under her skin - she needed to push past that. It was just something Sadomechanism did, and she couldn't let it hinder her ability to concentrate.
The comment about Gawain, though, that gave her pause. If they weren't working towards something together, then what purpose did Gawain have in bringing Sado here? Was it simply as a distraction, so Gawain could achieve his goals? If that were the case, why did he remain outside, while Sado pushed deeper into the facility? Or maybe his plans hinged on Sado finding something, here, and using it. A weapon or a tool.
Maybe she was overthinking this, and Gawain simply reveled in the destruction he caused. It reminded her of a quote from Road Brothers -
Some men just like to see the world burn. I'm the fire.
That you are, brother, and which of us is worse?
Gawain was the one who wanted to see it burn, and Sado was simply the fire he used to make it happen. But if that was his end, was it at the service of any belief? Any ideology? Terrorists often had goals, ideals they were trying to serve, and the idea of one causing chaos for chaos' sake didn't sit well with Basilica. Certainly not someone as well-spoken as Gawain, the perfect stereotype of an ideologue.
Back to the fight. The bullets didn't seem to do much at all, and while the shards did push deeper, she saw no sign they slowed Sadomechanism down. If anything, it was his own hunger for power that was haltering him, his mass growing more and more sluggish the deeper he plunged into the facility.
And the harder and harder to stop.
Sending out another call, Basilica pulled in more shards, coalescing them into a cloud that orbited her like planetary rings. She was prepared for another assault when a whisper came from the captive sphere.
"Jump, my dear."
"Move!" she shouted-shrieked, flinging herself skyward and at an angle, trying to grab Grymskull by the armpits and pull him up with her. Instead of a weapon, the rings of shards became a shield, pulling beneath them to guard between whatever might be coming from below. A split second later, the floor erupted with arcs of electricity, air crackling, sharp, acrid ozone filling her lungs.
Basilica coughed, and both she and Grymskull faltered, dropping towards the floor below.
