Two more small people arrived at camp. Mate let his new friend do the talking, nodding approval at her description of Beck. She was, indeed, not a troll. The talk after that turned to gold, which was not interesting. Mate did not have much use for gold. Beck had told him that if he went to a town, he could trade the small copper coins for cooked eggs at one of the inns. Mate liked eggs very much, whether or not they were cooked, so he found copper very useful. Gold was not so useful, though. Beck said it could be traded for things like rooms at inns or sometimes horses, but Mate did not need any of that, and everyone else here already seemed to have a horse, so that was probably why they were tossing the gold to each other and trying to get rid of it for things of little value.
"Beck... gone." He did not know more than this. Beck had been with him, in Allegria, and then she had not been there any more. She was not dead, because Mate had asked the guard about that. The guard had said "Oh no, oh no, I'll tell you anything you want, Mate!" before Mate had even told him his own name, but he hadn't known anything about Beck. She had simply gone. "Nnnot dead." It was important that they know that.
"Not llllllllland." He rolled the L around inside the cavern of his mouth a few extra times, for good measure. Mate knew how to find his friends on the land. "Sea? S-ky?" The sea was large, not like the fens. He liked the ocean, but it was a good place for a small person to get lost. And the sky was too large entirely. Trolls didn't have much to do with the sky. It was up there, but it was not important, not like friends.
