Late Spring
Japan
The last flowers of the season were floating through the air as four teenagers made their way down a path. It had been a long spring. There had been nearly half a dozen demons that Toshiko and her friends had vanquished over the past few months, and they were on their way to yet another. Another long season of demon slaying was upon them, and Toshiko was wondering when they would ever get a break. It seemed like forever since their last rest, like forever since they were able to sit down and enjoy a meal without worry. She supposed that was part of the demon slayer experience, but she still hoped for it.
Up above, a crow swooped in. It circled Toshiko and her friends and cawed loudly. “CAW! Head east, Toshiko, Sumi, Ishinikko, Sayua! Head east! CAW!” It continued to fly above them, circling them as though it was shepherding them toward the east. She watched it for a moment, watching the light as it created oil slicks on the bird’s wings, but eventually she returned her gaze to the road ahead of them. They were nearing a crossroads, and she thought she could see two figures standing there. Something about them looked... strange.
She looked at the others in her group and kept walking. Although they had all met previously, either at Final Selection or through joint hunting trips, this was the first time so many of them had been grouped together. Whatever they were heading toward must have been big for so many mid rank slayers. After all, Sayua, Ishinikko, and Toshiko herself were all rank Tsuchinoe, and Sumi was–
A loud, dramatic sigh sounded from off to Toshiko’s right and she grit her teeth. Sumi had a despondent look on her face, as though the world was ending. This was no less than the tenth sigh since they’d grouped up earlier that day. Everything about the girl made Toshiko wildly aggravated, from her moody nature to her depressing jisei. Sumi was the most sad and depressing person she had ever met- but she made for a great target.
“What’s the matter, Sumi? Not enjoying the walk?”
