Biography
Listen, I'm not exactly sure what you want from me here. A tragic backstory, maybe? Something to help rationalize sudden and senseless violence? Maybe I got double crossed by some hero type and this is my revenge. Maybe my mom was murdered in front of me or my dad beat me. Maybe I had a gifted sister I was always jealous of. Even if any of that was true, do you think I'd leave enough evidence for anybody to find?
Or maybe I was a troubled teen dumped in the system, got lost one time running away and something horrible possessed me to chew on another living person. Maybe I was some villain's underpaid lackey and decided it was to - heh, pardon my phrasing - bite back. Maybe in some twisted way I think I'm doing some good to the world by putting you out of your misery.
Or maybe it's not about any of that. Maybe it's just about that look of betrayal in your eyes after I made you helpless. Maybe I'm just the kind of sick, manipulative bastard who'd do this anyway, even if I didn't have a craving deep in my bones to grow stronger. Maybe I just like to hear my own voice at this part, where I know you want me to launch into a monologue and explain and buy you precious seconds before I decide I'm hungry enough to stop talking.
Maybe I'm misguided, or desperate, or malicious.
I'll let you come to your own conclusions. If that's really what you'd want to waste your dying thoughts on.

The traveling vigilante known as the Cryptid has a small arsenal of consistent tools for his work. He seems to seek out the company of others in his fighting class, although alone he's more than a match for the common criminal. To others he seems to have an aversion to excessive use of violence. That doesn't mean he doesn't use weapons, of course. His close range weapon of choice are Indian bagh nakh claws, or tiger claws, a form of knucklebracer that conceals claws in the open palm and reveals curved metal claws when the hand closes into a fist. And of course he's got a handgun. His mask resembles a black, jagged jack-o-lantern smile with uneven eye holes, and he wears a long black coat with layers beneath both for armored padding and to hide the unhealthily thin form underneath.
Few realize the Cryptid is metahuman. His abilities come in two types: active, and passive. His passive powers are those of keen senses - hearing, smell, and instincts. He also possesses superhuman strength and speed, although the degree of this ability is determined consciously. The more energy he expends to behave superhumanly, the more energy he will have to replace later. The Cryptid's active abilities have a similar cost, but a different origin: his limited shapeshifting is the result of physical absorption and processing of human DNA, typically through consumption and digestion. This is the part he does not share with his usual allies. A little hair or blood is enough to allow him temporary access to another person's physical shape, although in order to gain mass he requires a proportional (not necessarily equal) mass of food consumed. To become smaller, his body absorbs the unnecessary mass it already possesses, although in order to change back he must either have access to these reserves or find another source of mass. The same principle applies for his healing factor and processes.
There are a number of missing persons cases related to his eating habits, but without evidence or witnesses there's no way to make that connection offhand and he knows.hpw to cover his tracks. His tendency toward chewing on people in the already dangerous work of vigilantism started as a hunch that they wouldn't be missed, but he's come to find at least a little enjoyment in the process that brings them from friend to food. Todd has half a dozen faces he can cycle through permanently from absolutely consumed persons, although he mostly uses this to keep his secret identity fully concealed in case he has to move on. With some practice he has been able to alter only parts of his face for periods of time - eye color, jawline, nose shape - but even these little exercises cost energy. Excessive energy loss can lead to slips or inconsistency in behavior. And Todd doesn't make slips by accident very often anymore.
