We called it the Traveler, and its arrival changed us forever. The Traveler brought with it the Light. A potent, paracausal energy, capable of terraforming worlds in hours. The journey to the Moon went from three days to mere minutes. Great cities were built on Mars and Venus, bastions of human accomplishment, testaments to the Light. Mercury became a garden world. Human lifespan tripled. It was a time of miracles. We stared out at the galaxy and knew that it was our destiny to walk in the light of other stars.
With the gift of the Light, came the discovery of Darkness. Where the Light prevailed over the physical world, changing reality at an atomic level at ease, the Darkness found its domain in the mental, and the emotional, realm. The Darkness called to our ambitions, played on our emotions and demanded control of them, or we would be lost. Some were, but others capitalized on this power. This metaphysical power gave birth to the Exos, human beings transferred into robotic bodies, repairable and revivable through backups of their memories. Through the Darkness, memory loss became a forgotten thing, and the lines between the physical world and the mental became blurred.
The Golden Age lasted for centuries. It was a time of peace, harmony, and growth, as the solar system truly became ours. Humanity thrived, on the balance between Light and Darkness.
But the Traveler had an enemy. A force wielding Darkness like a weapon, which had hunted it for eons across the black gulfs of space. Centuries after our Golden Age began, this Force in the Darkness found us. And that was the end of everything.
The Collapse was brutal, and quick. We lost contact with our outer colonies, on Io and Titan, in the first wave, forcing the Traveler to flee from Io to Earth. Armies descended on Mars, rendering the Warmind, Rasputin, inadequate to stop the invasion. The Moon was lost to the waves of the Hive, as a Pyramid ship landed there as a forward base of the final assault on Earth and the Traveler.
In a final gasp for humanity, the Traveler stood its ground. In a burst of Light, the purveyors of our Collapse were pushed beyond the system, and rendered dormant. In this final stand, the Traveler expended much of its light, going dormant as well, just above the Earth’s surface. As a final gift to the people it had blessed, it released the Ghosts.
Some of those who had died in the Collapse were reborn in the Light, turned Risen by the Ghosts from the Traveler, given the Light to wield as a weapon and tool through the elements. Others, survivors, leaned into the Darkness, recognizing that it was not at fault for the Collapse, gaining a mastery over the metaphysical, and the psychological. Some practiced both.
The Dark Age began soon after the Collapse. Risen, wielding the Light, and Survivors, wielding the Darkness, came to use their powers for their own gain. Warlords, conquerors, all fighting to rule the ruined world under their power, all the while the regular people fought to survive. It was a time of chaos and upheaval. There was no safety, nor peace. Only destruction, and combat.
The Dark Age was a time of tumult, of upheaval and destruction. It was a time where what made us who we were during the Golden Age was uprooted, and forgotten in the ensuing chaos. Lightbearers and Darkness Wielders brought their power to bear over those who did not have the privilege or gift for either power. To protect them, rose the Iron Lords, Risen and Adepts alike who swore themselves to the protection of the people, and to uphold values thought lost in the Collapse.
It was during the Dark Age that the Awoken made themselves known. People who had been in the expanse of space when the Force in the Darkness arrived, trapped between the inexorable push of the Darkness and the defiant resistance of the Light. This resonance changed them, and threw them from our reality and into there own, a place where they existed in both Light and Darkness from inception. Mastery followed, and they returned to Sol, and Earth, during this time of conflict.
From the shadow of the Traveler, the Iron Lords set the standard. Their numbers swelled, and their influence spread. Communities turned to villages, villages to towns, towns to cities. The Iron Lords established their titles, ruling through strength and compassion, unbending will but dedicated to serving their people. Thus began the Silver Age.
A time of relative peace, though conflict has not been forgotten. Much has been, such as space travel, industrial manufacturing, interplanetary travel. We live in the ruins of the Golden Age, and struggle against the Hive, the Fallen, and even ourselves, to reach the heights we once stood atop. Perhaps one day, a second Golden Age will begin. For now, though, we survive.
