Kaya had expected things to be different.
They were different, she supposed, but they were not different in the way that she had expected them to be. Somehow, she had thought that a change that seemed so monumental would be reflected in the world around her, or at least in the school around her. Instead, the next week had progressed with a remarkable lack of remarkability. She had done her homework. She had attended her classes. She had spoken to her classmates - not much. She didn't want to say anything about the important things, and it was proving quite impossible to care about the mundane things any more. A week ago, she might have consoled someone over a regrettable grade on a quiz. Now? Kaya just couldn't find it in herself to be bothered any more.
She kept her grades up, of course. She wasn't about to let herself slip just because things were different now. Sometimes, when she was alone, she would breathe a whisper of frost into the air, just to make sure it was really there, but it seemed that wasn't something that would leave her. Kaya didn't know if that was all that mattered, exactly, but it certainly mattered enough that everything else seemed a bit pale in comparison.
In the background of these thoughts, math happened. It was a droning voice, and problems that involved only numbers, and an assignment copied out from the board for the weekend and finally, finally, the bell ringing at the end of the last period of the day, signaling the start of the weekend. Kaya gathered her things together as some of the other students started slipping out of the classroom, and wondered what, exactly, she was going to do.
Certain mysteries weren't going to solve themselves, after all.
