"Ah. Well." Mrs. Amberly finished her tea and set the cup down once more with a definitive but dainty clink against its saucer. "It wasn't what she left so much as that she didn't."
But this would make very little sense, wouldn't it? And they were children, after all. Perhaps it would be easier to do nothing, to let them go along being children. It would certainly be kinder. Kindness had its limitations, though, and no matter how much one wanted to save the world with it, there always did have to be something more. She would never wish to harm a child... but they were all children, and some of them didn't even know the danger that they were in.
"I suppose in order to make sense of it all, we shall all have to go down to the subbasement. Normally students are not allowed down there - indeed, not even most of the teachers, but you'll be with me, and I dare say I get away with a few things. Come along when you've finished your tea, then, girls. I dare say that the stairs will be harder on me than they will on you."
They wouldn't have to go outside, at least. The weather was looking quite miserable. It was the right sort of weather to curl up beside a fireplace with a stack of good books and a pot of tea - but it seemed Mrs. Amberly wouldn't be doing that today, either. Once the girls had had a chance to finish their drinks, she would lead the way to the stairwell - nowhere the girls wouldn't recognize yet, but once they had passed beyond the classroom levels and past the basement level with the furnace room and maintenance rooms, she would find once again that small and unobtrusive door.
The key was in her pocket. She did not care to let it out of her sight these days.
