"Listen well brothers and sisters, and remember your vows. We are the shield of Elaria, hard as rock and stone. We are the blades of the Gods, forged in fire and blood. We alone stand against the darkness, and need neither praise nor song to carry out our duty. We are Vigilant." - Grandmaster Gracci during the 186th Siege of Karuzgard
For over a thousand years, the fortress of Karuzgard has defended Elaria from the horrors that lie beyond the Encircling Mountains. Built orginally by the dwarves, they took on the sacred duty of protecting the land from orckin, beasts and monsters, blocking the only path into the Heartlands. Carved from thick black stone blocks, to date the fortress has survived 244 sieges from the forces of darkness, with the dwarves bearing the brunt of the force. However the constant loss of life defending the great gate and walls began to take its toll on the dwarven people, and their numbers dwindled. Unable to hold out alone anymore, the dwarves petitioned the other races for aid, those joining becoming known as the Vilgilant. Over times the dwarves would fade from memory, the last of them perishing at Karuzgard but some still say that they fled into the mountains, burying their halls far below the earth until they can rise again.
Originally the Order of the Vigilant was made up of accomplished soldiers and knights looking for a greater purpose to serve. Word spread of their almost supernatural powers, a single Vigilant able to defeat over one hundred enemies. When the last known dwarf passed on, the Vigilant were the ones to take up the duty, holding out against the forces of darkness. Respected and honoured, they initially had no shortage of willing recruits, but much like the dwarves their numbers began to give way. Struggling to keep up with the losses, the Vigilant forcefully conscripted the worse criminals to aid them in the fight, eventually losing the air of respectability they had built up over the years. While this did temporarily save the Order, the lack of recruits slowly began to suffocate them, the order now made up of criminals and those who have no other alternative.
It is the year 1312 after Karuzgard's founding, and over 15 years since the last major siege of the fortress. The nations of Elaria continue to live in peace, hardly considering what lies beyond the mountains of the north as they wage war through their tangled webs of alliances. With a small reprive, the Order has taken to sending out more small scouting parties to investigate why things have been so quiet, as well as continuing to bolster their numbers. For your own reason, you have joined the Order either willingly or through conscription, and have joined your recruiter Ashe Blackwell at Karuzgard. After a week of Initiate duties, a tournament has been arranged between the different companies to test the new arrivals.
Thus begins the journey of the Ashen Knights and their induction into the Order. A journey that will see the greatest army of darkness march against Karuzgard, one that will inevitably breach its defences. As one of the few remaining of the Order, it is up to you to rebuilt, save the Heartlands and locate the lost Dwarves.
If interested, I'll include some lore based on the Order of the Vigilant and if you'd like additional information on anything, just ask. The greater world building will be done together during the RP, please feel free to make your character as creative as you'd like.
