On the transport, Dorothy takes a seat up front and props her tablet on the dash. She’s got a decent view out the front viewport, so she sets to work creating a rudimentary map of the major landmarks they pass. Her notes consist of quick shapes and scribbled writing for the most part, largely indecipherable to anyone but herself. She’ll double check the footage later to make sure she got everything, but it’s always good to get initial impressions down while they’re fresh.
When they reach the destroyed, fragmented section of the shell, she hisses through her teeth, shakes her head, then notes it down. Such a shame to see culture and invention and life go to waste. If they find a historical record, she’s documenting and releasing it, orders be damned. It’s an impressively large scale of destruction, and it might be worth picking through the scraps later, but for now they have to keep moving, and so do her thoughts.
On the inside of the shell, what catches Dorothy’s attention the most are the craters and ruins - they’ve been sitting long enough to be covered in plant growth, which means that whatever happened, it happened a long time ago. That, or the plants grow quick, which is something else to watch out for.
Finally, they’re nearly at the landing site. She finishes up a few more jotted notes before setting her pen down and stretching out her writing hand. Cory takes the lead on instructions, and Dorothy nods along. She’s got a good head on her shoulders.
“I’ve got my own supplies, and I’ll help with one of the shelters. I’m thinking we should explore in a grid pattern. Everyone can fan out and see what there is to find, but try to stay in shouting distance.” Here, she looks around the group, swiveling her chair to survey everyone. “If any of you see something interesting or especially if you see something dangerous or something goes wrong, do give a shout. I don’t want to see any action heroes on the scouting mission.”
They might not need the warning, but they’re all fairly young, and heaven knows she was plenty willing to play the action hero when she was their age. It’s so easy to think you’re invincible before you know what the galaxy can really throw at you.
As the conversation shifts to group composition, Dorothy spends a long moment looking at Jackie. The Lutumul seems nervous, but that same ‘of course I can handle this’ pride makes them try to hide it, as usual. She debates whether to go along with it or offer them an out that lets them stay in a group with her without losing face, but Cilla beats her to it.
“It’s always nice to explore with someone you know you work well with,” she finally settles on saying. “Though, that said, I wouldn’t turn down a third set of hands.”
If she’s honest, it’d soothe her own worries as well, to keep Jackie close while they venture into parts unknown. She trusts the critter in a crisis, even if they are a little silly at times.
Once everyone’s got the general plan, Dorothy turns to address Yue Fei. “I think we should be ready to set down now. Has this ship got seismic scanners to make sure the ground’s solid enough?”
It should be standard equipment, or it would be if everyone listened to her. There’s nothing more nerve-wracking than landing and having the ground crack open right under you.
