"Hey, uh, Day? Yeah, I sorta got a situation. Can you . . . uh, can you help? I need to contain someone. I was thinking your place? The Empyrean?"
It had been about fifteen minutes since Alex received the vague, rather concerning message from her recent acquaintance Cassidy DeWitt, better known to the world as Spider-Bite. She was fairly confident that he wouldn't have contacted her frivolously, so she'd dropped what she was doing and sprung into action. Although, all that really consisted of was asking him what his current location was, so she could have Doc set up a teleportal straight to her home. It had taken a little while for her AI assistant to get a proper fix, which had given Daystar ample time to get her 'work clothes' on. She had no idea if there was a fight in her future, but it certainly sounded possible, and if so, she wanted to be ready.
Now, the Solar Sentinel was standing in the Empyrean's atrium, a mostly-empty space with high ceilings and a great view of the Earth far below them. Any moment now, the teleportal was going to open- an Einstein-Rosen gate, better known as a wormhole, using the Stervos formula and running on Nicolas Pendragon's hardware. The technology provided near-instantaneous transit from one point to the next, but its creator had chosen not to release it to the general public, due to the obvious security risks, plus some inherent instability in the technology that could result in a singularity collapse. Thanks to her own powers, Alex rarely had to use it for herself, but it was basically the only way to get other people aboard the Empyrean without carrying them in her arms, or using a space shuttle.
As she waited for Cassidy and his guest to arrive, Alex pondered the meaning of his message. He'd chosen to call her by an abbreviation of her alias, Daystar, rather than her first name. It wasn't like she had a secret identity to protect, which raised the question of why he'd phrased it in that way. Was it an indication that he saw them more as colleagues than friends, despite being the one to suggest the latter during their last conversation? Maybe Alex was just reading too much into it. She folded her arms, tapping one foot impatiently. The Empyrean's artificial gravity was currently set to match that of the Earth, so as not to disorient the first-time visitors. However, she could still float around as much as she liked.
Though it had been built as the headquarters of the SOS, the Empyrean wasn't really meant to hold long-term prisoners. However, it did have a number of temporary holding cells, all of which were equipped with various methods of containing metahumans. Hopefully whoever Cassidy was bringing aboard wasn't too powerful, though, or it might pose some problems. Doc had mentioned something about a secret prison one time, but it was mostly defunct by the sound of it, and Alex wasn't really sure she wanted to start locking people up without a trial. There was some irony to her saying that when she'd recently been arguing to Cassidy about the merits of extrajudicial executions, of course.
Finally, the teleportal activated, silent save for a soft hum, as a rip in space-time itself was torn between Cassidy's location and Daystar's, allowing him and his companions to step through at their leisure. Once they were aboard the Empyrean, it would close just as quietly. Alex's arms remained crossed, but she flashed Spider-Bite a smile when she saw him wearing his armor. Hopefully it had been serving him well in the time since they'd spoken.
"Okay, what's the situation?"
